The excellent news this morning is that my bed doesn't despise me. At least I managed to see the end of the match. It will not be repeated, I am very much a Test match watcher and won't be bothering to sit up for the limited over cricket. Besides, this is a Friday, in future weeks I'll be aiming to get an early start at work so that I can nick off in the afternoon to go angling.

What with the present Mrs Izzard resuming work after a long sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in a couple of weeks, and the likelihood of the weather becoming milder through February and March, the siren song of the canal towpath will very likely be overwhelming now that I have decided to update the fishing tackle and start fishing again.

When I was looking through my fishing tackle recently, I came across an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which very likely was the previous occasion I went fishing. It feels a really long time and yet I remember it clearly, a sunny day in June when I went for a day's fishing on the Thames at Walton, and I caught my single ever barbel. This could seem odd, but most of the angling I did as a youth was on a small lake in the town where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.

In those days, I didn't have a much fishing tackle as I never had a lot of money and yet I still have a lot of of it from those days. I find it astonishing that even when I did earn a lot of money, I never really thought about angling or spending some money and getting some really great fishing tackle and using up more time by the water.

When I do return, I will need to shell out some change\money, the priority is getting a rod licence and becoming a member of the Birmingham Anglers Association who are in charge of fishing on the canals around here, then I will need some new fishing tackle as mine is elderly and most likely outlawed now, especially the hooks which all look to have barbs which I am fairly sure aren't allowed now.

I cannot wait to return, though I'm not ashamed to say that I was always and definitely will be now, a very fair weather fisherman, so I will need dry, warm conditions.
