The perfect holiday destination is one with great weather, stunning beaches, a good nightlife and plenty of things to do. It's even better when you don't have to travel halfway around the world to get there but can simply drive down. The Florida Keys is one of those destinations and Key West fishing charters will ensure that you have the action-packed holiday of a lifetime.
Key West is the main city on the eponymous island which is probably the most famous of the Florida Keys. Notable people from playwrights like Tennessee Williams to US presidents like Harry S Truman have been making this island their destination of choice to get away from the winter cold. The one person who will probably always be associated with the island is author Ernest Hemingway who, while staying here, became a fishing enthusiast.
Hemingway particularly loved deep-sea fishing and there are several charter tours that specialize in this activity. It's in those deep waters outside of the barrier reef off the keys that you'll find big game fish. Get tuna or mahi-mahi for the pot or catch a marlin or a sailfish for a trophy.
Another option is to go for more variety by using light tackle. For this you'll need a smaller vessel that can navigate the reefs. Sharks, snapper and groupon are some of the species you can catch but the area is renowned for its tarpon, which visit these waters in spring. If the charter package doesn't include snorkeling gear, bring your own because you'll want to get a closer look of the wrecks and reef life too.
Flats fishing is another popular pastime in the Keys. There are areas close to shore where the water is very shallow and you'll need a flats skiff, which is a special boat for the purpose of navigating the shallows. Barracuda hunt around here but the Key West Grand Slam requires you to catch a permit, a tarpon and a bonefish in one day.
A great option if you can't afford to charter a boat of your own is to go on a trip on a party boat. You share the vessel with twenty to fifty others so if you want a quiet day out on the waters, this is probably not the best option for you. However, it's a good way to meet new people and because it's not all about the fish, the whole family will enjoy it.
Key West sees glorious weather for most of the year. Between May and around October it's rainy season but even then it it usually rains only in the mornings. Since fewer people visit during this time of year, the city and the island attractions will be less crowded too. Just be aware that this is hurricane season too.
Key West fishing charters are easy to find and book online. In the city itself you'll also find plenty of charter companies. If it's a beautiful day and you wonder what to do, head to one of these for the adventure of a lifetime and you may even have dinner sorted.
