One of the major tools required by the people who have a flair for hunting is the hunting knife. No hunting can be done without the knife. Although fixed blade hunting knives were used for the purpose of hunting, the convenience of foldable hunting knives has made these knives more prominent over the fixed blade hunting knives.
Folding hunting knives are of two types i.e. traditional pocket knives and lock back pocket knives. Lock back hunting knives have a blade locking mechanism which helps in avoiding unwanted flip of the blade. Traditional pocket knives are the ones which are very compact and can be carried easily.
Benefits and the Drawbacks - One of the major benefits of the folding hunting knife is that the blade can be folded into the handle. This helps in carrying safely, since the chances of getting injured while carrying is reduced. The folding hunting knife is also compact when they are folded and hence can be carried easily. The chances, that the blades may get damaged while being carried is also very low.
Most of the folding knives have a thumb stud which let the user open the knife with the thumb. This helps in circumstances when only one hand is free for opening the knife, while the other may be busy with other tasks. At the same time, folding pocket knives are not usually as strong as fixed blade hunting knives and due to their small size they often cannot be used for skinning large animals.
Beyond Hunting - Folding hunting knives are used for various purposes other than hunting. Some of them are cutting off the tree branches, crops, and cutting the hard ropes. Fishermen make extensive use of this knife for cleaning the fish and cutting the fish line.
Multiple Blades - Folding hunting knives are also available with multiple blades, each of which is intended to perform different task. The different blades used in these types of folding knives are clip point, drop point and skinning blades. Clip points have a sharp and well defined point which helps with the insertion. Drop point blades are used to get control or grip while cutting. Skinning blades, as the name indicates are used for skinning the animals.
Folding hunting knives come in different sizes and shapes. When planning to purchase the folding hunting knife, one must first think about the main intention of buying the knife. If it is for some specific and crucial tasks, one can opt to buy the higher end knife else, the basic folding hunting knife would be enough for most of the minor tasks.
