Tips That Help Make Your Travel Successful

By Eddey P Stonehowse

If you want to explore new cultures, travel is a fun way to experience the world. It does, however, require an investment of time and money. Here are some helpful tips for making the most of your precious vacation time to travel and keeping it affordable.

Investigate if seasickness might be something you are prone to before going on a cruise. It could really turn your dream adventure into a nightmare. You could find yourself bedridden for days suffering from seasickness, rather than enjoying your cruise. It is best to be prepared for any contingency by purchasing a good over-the-counter motion sickness medication before you leave on your trip.

When you are in an unfamiliar area, be on guard for criminals acting as officials such as law enforcement. Never give someone your passport, because they might not give it back to you. If they state you must go to an office, offer to walk the distance with them. Avoid getting into a vehicle with anyone you don't know.

If you are camping and plan on hiking, you should make sure that you have some maps of the location you are in. Keep them handy. It's also not a bad idea to have some kind of GPS device or compass with you and to know how to use them if you get lost.

The shoes you wear when you go flying should be comfortable, lightweight, and easy to take off and put on. You will have to remove them for security checks. They should always be comfortable. When you are in the airport or on the airplane, you will sit more than you will walk, so having good arch supports is not the most important thing. Therefore, it is smart to wear sandals or flip-flops when flying.

Try to explain airport security to children. Before you set off for the airport, explain to them the security procedures. Keep your kids close to you at all times, and try to have another adult in your party go ahead of them so that they can see that there is nothing to fear in a security check.

Staying awake until about 8pm in local time will help you to adjust better in the new time zone. Even if you feel like you must go to sleep, avoid going to bed too early when you travel across time zones. If you do, you may prolong your jet lag as your body will not have adjusted to the new time. Getting over jet lag quicker will give you more time to enjoy your vacation.

Get a workout in before you get on the plane. Longer flights can be hard on your body. Sitting in the same position for long periods of time can cause leg and back cramps. Getting in a workout, or at least some stretching, before you board the plane can help cut down or eliminate any leg and back muscle issues.

If you have children traveling with you, make sure you have a current, color photo of them with you, in the event they become lost. Losing track of a child can be very frightening. Unfortunately, children get distracted and wander off or something else happens. If you have a good quality photograph to show the people at your location, or the police, it can make getting your child back that much easier, and faster too.

Don't trust e-mails that offer deals about travel packages. If you never joined the company's email list or don't recognize the company, delete the email without opening it.

When traveling to other countries, pack bottled water. Many foreign countries have drinking water that is not purified leading to illness. Don't forget to use bottled water when brushing your teeth either. Although it may seem inconsequential, you could get sick even from the small amount of water used when you brush your teeth.

When traveling with kids, make sure they all carry identification. Ensure each child has enough money to make a call at a pay phone. Make sure you have recent pictures of your child, and know his or her height and weight.

It is important to remain calm and not panic if your luggage does not make it to your vacation spot with you. Ask any airport official where the lost luggage office is; have your documents from the flight and identification cards handy and fill out the appropriate paperwork. Airlines want happy customers, and they will do all that is in their power to find your luggage.

You do not always have to travel far to experience a great day trip or weekend getaway. You can find enjoyable places to visit in your home state or one that's close by. Travel expenses can be greatly reduced by staying in your home state with the added benefit that you will be supporting local merchants, restaurants and attractions. You might be surprised by the attractions that are hidden so close to home.

Don't forget to pack your kids car seats when you bring them along for a road trip. If you do not bring them with you, you will likely have to purchase new ones just for the trip.

Check the dates on when your passport expires. Some countries have certain rules about the expiration. If it expires within a certain time frame, they will not allow you to come into their country. These periods usually range anywhere from a year to three months.

Make sure to book a specific seat to make your flight as comfortable as you can. Although certain airlines allow you to pick your seat, others don't. Upon booking your flight, watch the booking site to see if this option is available. You will see a significant difference over just settling for what is available.

Put your personal information on a label inside your bags. Include your phone number and address along with your name. Doing this can really be a lifesaver if your luggage is separated from you, so when someone else finds it, they can contact you. This will give you peace of mind whenever you cannot locate your luggage immediately.

By remembering the tips in this guide, you will surely be able to discover new and exciting things on your vacation. No matter if this will be your first vacation or fifteenth, your trip will be positively affected by following this advice.
