Types Of Big Game Fishing Tackle

By Chloe Gib

Fishermen and women worldwide know that they have to have special poles, reels, and big game fishing tackle when catching fish from the sea. Anglers who fish from lakes alone have no idea the sport involved when plucking fish from the ocean. These sea-faring creatures can grow to mammoth sizes, and the average gear just will not do.

First of all, the average reel is not adequate. They must have durable spinning reels spun with high-tension line designed for larger game. There are some freshwater anglers who utilize these same tools when trying to catch massive fish from bodies of water in South America or the North American Great Lakes.

Another item that anyone new to ocean angling will need to invest in is a proper rod. Rods used on the high seas are much sturdier, thicker, and longer than what most people are used to seeing. In fact, it is not uncommon for this rod to be fitted into a harness so that it does not get pulled out of the boat.

Bobbers and weights for this type of sport are also very different. Lake fishermen utilize very small weights and bobbers, but these are not even visible from a boat on the ocean. To catch fish from the ocean, the weights must be several pounds, and the bobbers are the size of a basket ball.

The lures used on the ocean are larger as well. Much like lake fishing, these lures are colorful and contain metal pieces that reflect sunlight. This reflection attracts the fish to the lure. Hidden within colorful, dangling distraction one may find the biggest hooks they have ever seen.

As previously mentioned, many of these tools are used to catch fresh water monsters. There are giant catfish, sturgeon, and even a fresh water sting ray located in Asia. Some of these giants can grow up to eight feet and weigh as much as a thousand pounds. It is recommended that anglers take care when going after some of these fares, as many of them are endangered.

Similar big game fishing tackle is used whether catching fish in the Atlantic or Lake Erie. Some boating guides provide this equipment for tourists, as most people do not invest in this equipment themselves. In addition, this type of equipment can sometimes be rented for catching fish off of piers and outlying rocks. In some areas, large fish can even be caught right off the beach.
