Key West Tarpon Fishing Is A Great Way To Spend A Florida Vacation

By Tonia Michael

The waters off the coast of Florida's southern tip provide some great sport for anyone who loves angling. If you are looking for a really great sporting holiday then Key West tarpon fishing is a wise choice to make. Large numbers of boats offer this type of sport in Key West harbor, often using by catch of shrimp or other small species as chum to lure in the fish.

An additional thrill can be obtained by angling at night for tarpon. This is often carried out by using spin casting outfits coupled up with a sinking plug. Anglers can then reel this slowly past the deep channels where the fish lurk.

Night fishing can be action packed, with many fish fighting hard to get away. The action is such that night angling like this for the fish can almost be considered a different sport. Tarpons are well-known for having mouths which are rough and tough, so setting hooks hard is essential when you head onto the water after dark.

You can also lure in the fish using fly techniques. There is usually plenty of guidance on hand when it comes to choosing which type of fly to use, so newcomers to this kind of angling need not worry too much, as long as they have a decent skipper aboard. Flies can often tempt fish who are not interested in biting on anything that is not immediately in front of them.

Fly fishing is particularly effective during the early part of the migration season, when the fish tend to travel in large pods. Using a fly does not guarantee success with these fish though. Tarpon are not especially motivated to find any food which does not come to them at this time of year, so make sure that you get the fly to them accurately if you opt for this technique.

Another fun way of going out to catch tarpon is in the early morning when they are 'rolling'. These fish are swimming round in a circle and it can look sometimes as though they are dancing in the water. While early morning is the best time to find fish who are behaving in this way, you can sometimes also find good sport at dusk from fish like this.

Of course, there are many other fish apart from tarpon to hunt in the waters in this part of Florida. Anglers can also fish wrecks where grouper, snapper and cobia lurk. If you fancy heading out to slightly deeper waters, then mahi mahi, sailfish and wahoo can also be caught, offering a good range of fishing for enthusiasts or beginners.

Key West tarpon fishing is a great choice to make for a fun, thrilling angling vacation. There is plenty for non-fishermen to see and do while the anglers are engaged in their struggles with the denizens of the deep, and no one should be bored in this part of Florida. With other species to hunt and a the night life on shore really something special, you cannot fail to have a great vacation here.
