There is great importance attached to academic qualifications in the contemporary society. This fact makes college education all the more important. The nature of college is that one will have to do one test after the other until the day that he or she graduates. Here is a look at how to effectively prepare and study for these tests.
The number one mistake that college students do is to waiting until the last minute so that they can start studying. Most spend the greater part of the semester having fun and attending all the parties. They only realize that they are not prepared for the exams when it is a week to the commencement of the same.
Students should always study from the beginning of the semester up to the time when they will sit for their exams. This allows them ample time to fully understand a large percentage of the concepts and theories in the unit of study. If they wait until the last minute, they will have so much to read but so little time. They will end up not being prepared for the examination. A student should always remember that prior preparation prevents poor performance.
Students need to appreciate that there are different ways of learning and studying. These different ways are suitable to each student individually. Some students only need to sit in class and they are able to understand the concepts taught. These are the kind of students who would never miss a class for the world. If they did, they may as well forget about ever understanding the concepts taught during that class.
For others, it takes a bit more effort to internalize what was taught in class. They have to read and re- read whatever was taught so that they can fully understand it. Many at time such a student will be referred to as a bookworm. Students who know their best way of learning and give it adequate attention are bound to score higher grades than those who do not.
There is a tendency amongst students to try and predict which topics will form part of the examination. After trying to predict, such students usually focus their attention on the said topics at the expense of others. This is a very bad situation.
While it is true that not all topics may feature in an examination, they should all be given equal attention. Some of the concepts not examined may prove to be vital in the later life of the student. Again there is no way the student can tell exactly which topics will feature in an exam and which one will not.
Last but not least, students should ensure that they get enough rest before going to sit for a test. Many are the times when a student decides to read throughout the night when they have an exam the next morning. There is no way one can expect to perform well if he or she was fatigued while writing the exam. Adequate rest is just as important as adequate study time.
