The Lure Of Bonefishing Key West Florida

By Michelle Howe

Many fishermen decide to go bonefishing Key West giving the idyllic surroundings for this vacation. The warm, shallow waters off of the Keys provide the perfect habitat for these fish. Mainly a silvery grey color, but with a darker back they can sometimes be hard for the untrained eye to spot. Even the locals often refer to them as the grey ghost.

They do like the warmer waters, and if it gets too cold will move off of the flats and into warmer waters. This is why it makes sense to get in touch with a local guide. They know the waters and the conditions, and they certainly know their fish.

Many fishermen have heard of flats fishing but have never experienced it for themselves. There are just two of you and the guide, on a small skiff. On reaching the flats the engine is trimmed and the guide starts to pole across the flats from a platform above the engine mountings.

From his elevated position he will be surveying the water, looking for that elusive fish. If he sees one he will call the distance in boat lengths. He will also tell you the direction using the clock face system. So if he tells you 6 lengths at 2 o'clock you know that over to your right is your fish, the rest is up to you and your skills.

When a fish strikes you will know all about it. This is a fish designed for speed. They are also a cautious and clever fish, it can develop into a battle of wills between you and the fish. One reason why so many people get attracted to this sport.

In this area there are some highly prized specimens waiting for you to hook them. There are two different methods of going after these fish. You could try light tackle fishing, or maybe you prefer the challenge of fly fishing. Whichever you choose, rig up your rods the night before. Room is limited on a skiff, Any rigging that has to be done on the day will start eating into your valuable fishing time.

If you are an experienced fly fisherman, doing it on the flats is like nothing you've experienced before. Try to obtain the services of a local fly fishing guide. He will have his own equipment. Ask him if he has any tips or tricks that might help you in your challenge.

Experience for yourself just why there are so many fishing contests down there. Light tackle fishing with live bait is both fun and exciting. These fish really love either shrimp or crab. So just follow your guides instructions and drop that tasty bait in front of one, and prepare to do battle.

So if you enjoy your fishing, there is only really one destination for your next vacation. Try bonefishing Key West style. You will soon discover why so many people come year after year. These fish are similar to those in the Bahamas, but are bigger and so much harder to catch
