Joe Don's Crappie Secrets

By Joe Don Fischer

Joe Don, like many people, is a big fan of crappie fishing and has his own collection of crappie secrets. He likes to catch a mess of crappie, take them home, fry them up, and eat them. Joe knows some crappie secrets that you should know too.

Long before the fishing season starts is when Joe goes out. He goes out in the winter while the water is low. He looks around and picks his favorite spots. He locates brush piles. He finds stands of dead timber. He scouts out everything.

On a typical Friday night, Joe will start his fishing trip. He spends time to check over the boat. He starts the engine so he does not get surprised the next day. He fills up his gas cans. He checks and rigs up all of his poles, no need to waste day light.

On Saturday morning, he kisses his wife before dawn and heads out to his favorite spots. He launches the boat, checks his maps, and off he goes to those spots he found during the low water.

When he gets to his favorite spot, Joe kills the motor and takes a look at the weather conditions. Depending on if it is overcast or sunny, he will pick different colors. As the sun comes up, he looks at the water. Same story, the color of the water will tell him what colors to pick.

Joe then makes his final color selection, hones the hook, rigs the lure and starts fishing. Nothing biting yet. Joe Don checks to make sure he is in the correct spot. He is. He then changes out the color of lure he is using. Wham, he gets a bite, then another, and another. As the day changes, he most likely changed lure color 20 times.

By noon, Joe has caught his limit of crappie fishing. He heads for home. Joe knows that dinner tonight is going to be a delicious plate of succulent, tender fried crappie. He know that tomorrow morning he will catch his limit again.

Folks is the way to catch a mess of crappie. Joe Don knows those crappie secrets.
