It Isn't Difficult To Get A Passport

By Andrea Witcomb

The first thing to do to get a passport, is visit the U. S. Government office and procure necessary paperwork. If you have a problem knowing where that is, there is a website listing of all places near your home to file. Attaining a travel permit is not difficult, but there are stringent rules in steps you need to take for getting one.

Whether you leave the country due to work or pleasure, travel permits are needed. Due to acts of terrorism throughout the world, homeland security requirements are more strict than ever. You may have to ravel without warning. Have these documents ready when and if the need for them arises.

The paperwork can be filled in at home, but pay close attention to the directions. Properly filled in forms will save a lot of time. You will need a birth certificate to prove citizenship. If you have misplaced yours, a notarized copy from your place of birth is acceptable. The website will give other additional accepted forms.

Besides citizenship proof other criteria that will have to be met. You will need to show proof of your current residence. The best way is with a current driver's license. If by chance, you do not drive a car, other forms will taken into consideration and those are listed on the government site as well.

A current photograph will be taken for the minimal charge of about $15.00. You can take them yourself but they must meet with the inspectors approval. They have to be exactly two inches by two inches in size. Some photographers will take them but rarely can you get them done for a smaller fee. Having them taken in the government office is usually the best choice.

Travels papers cost money but they are good for fifteen years. When you consider the cost in that light, the charge is very reasonable. You will pay about $110.00 to $140.00 for your first passport. The card is an additional $25.00. You can get the process put into high gear and get it within two weeks if you are wiling to pay an extra $60.00 charge. Without it, you will get your documents in four to six weeks.

Do not be taken in by people that tell you these government agencies are difficult to work with. If they are, it is due to the applicant being non-compliant. Either the necessary documents are missing or the paperwork is improperly filled out. These people will be required to go back and forth until they have followed the guidelines correctly. The application process is only what you make it.
