When you go fishing for carp, it won't be easy because carp can give you a run for your money. The challenge, however, is what draws sports fishers to carp fishing. If you want to find carp, look for lakes and ponds where the water temp is more than 60F and less than 70F. This is their ideal habitat. Carp become dormant and won't feed if the water in their lake or pond goes below 50F. Avoid these areas if you want to be successful. A good place to find carp hiding is under some type of sheltering structure - manmade or natural. Bridge, rock outcroppings, lily pads, stands of reeds along the banks, and brush overhanging the water are all good places for a carp to seek shelter. A good rule of thumb is to find out more about the location in which you plan to fish so you have a better chance of getting a good spot where carp hang out.

The easiest way to learn successful methods of catching carp, is to talk to experienced carp fishers. Some of the most effective techniques were developed in Europe, where carp fishing has a long history. Nowadays, you can talk to, and learn from, successful carp fishers in North America as well and they can give you advice pertinent to local conditions.
