Fishing Frenzy

Smallmouth love to hang out in water that has structure like rocks, piers, or sunken logs. A good fisherman will use smallmouth bass lures in areas where they know the fish will be. If you are fishing in a new spot you can often get clues as to the type of bottom by checking the shoreline or even by looking in the water.

They tend to prefer a water temperature of around fifty five degrees. That is when they are most active and spawning in shallow water. When the lake water warms up they head to deeper water where they are harder to find.

Spinning lures are a good lure to use. They come in a variety of colors. Use spinners that the fish can easily spot. A darker colored lure is best to use when the lake is clear. On the other hand, use light colored lures when the water is murky or cloudy.

Using a fly along with a maggot or meal worm is very effective for catching bass and other freshwater varieties. Use a bobber and jig it around the piers or along a rocky bottom. You will be sure to get some fast action. Use different colors and you will also find yourself catching crappies, perch and blue gills.

Live bait such as crayfish, minnows or worms is another good lure. An effective method is to use a double hook setup with a crab or worm on the lower hook and the minnow on the top hook. The fish can have their choice of bait. It is often productive to move the bait around a bit.

Mepps are a very effective lure. They come in various sizes but the number one or number two Mepps seem to work the best. You can cast with this lure or even troll through bass hot spots. Vary the reel speed for accessing different depths to find the fish.
