Best Times of Year to Visit Lake Powell For Water Sports

By Stephen Daniels

While a popular vacation spot for locals, Utah's Lake Powell would have to be considered one of the most surprisingly secret vacation destinations in the West. This recreationists' dream typically combines sun-drenched weather conditions with all of the classic "lake" activities such as camping, water skiing, fishing, and jet skiing. Add in the amazing red-rock vistas, hikes, and slot-canyon adventures, and it's safe to say that a Lake Powell vacation has a little something for everyone in the family. Lake Powell boat rentals are readily available year-round, so you don't have to own your own watercraft to partake in all the fun. Houseboats, fishing boats, ski boats, party pontoon boats, and even jet skis are all available, so you can accommodate almost any size group for a variety of activities.

Like most resort and vacation hot spots, the middle of summer and the surrounding months, of course, are the most popular times for ski boat rentals in Glen Canyon. Due to its desert location, temperatures at that time of year can reach up into the triple digits, just as you might expect. You will, as mentioned, also tend to see a lot more fellow vacationers during these months. If this is the only time you can visit, however, don't let that deter you. Thanks to the sheer vastness of the lake, it is usually not a problem finding you and your crew some elbow room.

Renting a houseboat for a multi day trip is a great way to find some relative solitude, as with a little effort, it is almost always possible to find a beautiful red-rock side canyon to call your own. Alternatively, a ski boat can get you and your group to a beautiful spot to camp too, either amongst or away from other campers.

While late spring to early fall are the best times for the sun worshippers, the weather remains pleasant and offers a lot more solitude during the later fall and winter months. Many of the lake's most dedicated fishermen, in fact, swear by the fall as many of the fish, such as striped bass, are aggressively on the bite, trying to fatten up for the winter months. Also, true water-skiing connoisseurs claim that the glassiest water is to be found in the early fall because there is less wind and a lot less traffic stirring up the waters.

Thanks to a lot of effort and diligence, Lake Powell is still free of the small mussels that are plaguing so many nearby lakes. To maintain the mussel free status, you should be aware all boats will be checked for this troublesome invasive species at all the major boat ramps. One way to ensure that you will not have a problem, of course, is to rent what you need from one of the Lake Powell boat rental agencies.
