Best Review of The Leatherman Surge

By Oliver Toughill

There are very few multi tools whose very appearance gives the impression of authority and the toughness required to outlive years of helping with your workplace or favourate chores.

The Leatherman Surge has a beefy, square shouldered appearance despite the silvery, streamlined glare from its stainless steel construction, and after closer analysis and experience indicate that it cannot be bettered at this moment in time for people who demand a dependable, long lasting implement to serve them anyplace from the farm to the garage to the factory floor or even overseas military deployment, where the reliability of your multi tool coud be the decisive factor in a life or death situation.

The Leatherman Surge is a fairly large multi tool, measuring nine inches when open or four-and -a-half when closed and weighing in at 12.5 ounces. The girder-like structure of the handles with brawny pivots and mountings attatch to a head of pliers which are heavily built but equally feature the convenience of needlenose tips. The tools onboard are the longest of any Leatherman tools stretching to 3.1 inches each (to be fair though these are only a tenth of an inch longer than the tools on the Blast).

Tested by countless highly motivated individuals, the Surge has passed the ultimate tests, time and time again by being put through its paces in abnormal situations such as military deployment overseas, survival training and demanding construction work. When confronted with the common stresses of pulling, twisting or cutting, the stresses are a breeze with this tool when doing heavy duty work as apposed to other lighter models.

The main advantages to the Surge can also become the multi tool's biggest drawback occasionally. However with that said it is a powerfull construction and will survive for many years to come due to its hefty construction even though it is slightly clumsier than other models.

If your general employment of the tool is sporadic and light, then the Leatherman Surge would definately be overkill. You would be better complimented with a lighter multi tool that delivers a finer set of pliers including finer grade onboard tools such as the Skeletool as pondering with a hefty twelve and a half ounces of the Surge weighing down your pocket.

Still, for most of us who depend on a multi tool that grafts as hard as they do, the Surge offers some of the most bulldog-tough and unswerving functionality of all the contemporary multi tools when it comes to the daily tasks at hand.

A Mountain of Onboard Tools and Functions

As one would expect from the bigger frame and heroic design of the Leatherman Surge, there are many more available onboard tools to be found in it than on any other Leatherman pliers set with the exception of one. The Leatherman Surge has a whopping 21 different functions all crammed into the frame, yet they somehow smoothly integrate themselves into the design and do not " get in one anothers way" - the design is open and clean despite the quantity of tools.

A saw and two knifes are noticably the largest of the onboard tools, with the saw being well equiped to deal with most types of wooden objects, but not recommended for metal. The two knifes consist of a serrated sheep's foot blade and a smooth bladed clip point knife for numerous cutting jobs.

The handles are marked to function as a 9 inch or 22 cetimeter ruler, while other onboard tools found in the Surge comprise of needlenose pliers, a heavy duty bit driver with several different included bits with an (added advantage of adding more with a Leatherman bit kit), scissors, an awl with thread and loop, a diamond coated file, a bottle opener, a can opener, a wood/metal file, electrical crimper, hard wire cutters, stranded wire cutters, a wire stripper and last but not least a screwdriver.

The bit driver, of course allows you to utilise the Surge for adapting to suit a multiple selection of fasteners subject to the bits you add, a vitally major element for some users. The blades can be opened single handed with tool closed, and lock into place ensuring your safety. With no holds barred, the Leatherman Surge is a heavy duty, powerful debut in the multi tool market that packs in as many tools logically achievable into a single pair of folding pliers.
