The shelters of the past were usually made of leather skins or grass that were harvested from the fields around a persons home site. These shelters of the past looked at lot like our modern day canopies. Today we use modern fabrics for stronger protection from the elements.
If you are looking for a modern shelter with sides on it to keep the elements out, then maybe you should be considering a tent instead. A canopy can be purchased with one or more side panels but they will not be as tightly sealed as a regular tent.
There are canopies that are attached to buildings that fold in and out to provide shade and protection from the elements. There are canopies that serve as small shelters over hot dog vendors on the city streets or by the sea shore. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts use canopies when they are at events and camp outs. Weddings, graduations, barbeques, birthday parties, and the list goes on and on. You don't realize how much the simple canopy is needed and used in our daily lives.
The original gas lantern came from a time in history when people found that gas burned a lot brighter and cleaner than did kerosine. W. C. Coleman was the man that started a company to mass produce the gas lantern after he saw the new lantern burning in a store one time while he was selling products as a salesman. Later, Mr. Coleman's Company went on to produce sleeping bags, coolers and all types of out door equipment.
The current day canopies are no longer made of left over animal skins or grass, but high tech fabrics that fight the elements extremely well, and last many years. Coleman, just like the other manufacturers make several different sizes and colors of these canopies and most them can be set up in as little as three minutes.
If you want to get your canopy out of the bag and up in a hurry, you need 3 helpers to make it fast. One person can easily do it, but it takes a little longer. Pull the canopy out of the bag and set the feet end on the ground. Each person grabs a corner and pulls out on it. As they do the canopy gets larger and larger as the sides extend. Now just pull up on the sides so that you can set the buttons in place on the corner legs and viola! You have a finished product.
The NFL (National Football League) has licensed the Coleman Company to produce a line of Canopies that have got your favorite team's logos and color presented on the fabric. These 10' x 10' canopies can have side curtains added to further show off your teams spirit and colors.
