When to fish based on moonrise and moonset. Understanding the relationship between the moon and fishing will help you catch more fish.

Want to catch more fish? Learn how the moon affects fishing. Best fishing times are based on a calculatlion available in Solunar tables. These tables let you know when to fish based on the rise and set times of the sun and moon as well as the moon phase. Put all these variables together and you have the optimum times and days to catch more fish.

Sunrise and sunset are active times for feeding fish and game. These times are marked by increase and decrease in daylight and easily remembered and observed. The moon rise and set are not as noticeable nut have an equal effect on fish and game. It is not known how much of an affect the moon has but it is noticeable.

Tides are important to ocean fishing. Fish are active and feeding when the water is moving. There is a noticalbe decrease in activity during the slack tide - midway between the high and low tides. Tide changes follow the moons rise and set. The moons rise and set are 50 minutes later each day. Tide charts are needed in addition to the solunar tables for saltwater fishing. Geography and underwater topography play a roll in when the actual high or low tide will reach a certain area. Often places only miles away will have an hour or more difference in tidal activity.

Some days are better than others. Better days are when the moon rises and sets within an hour of the sun. Take advantage of these days and fish 45 minutes each side of the sunrise and sunset. Days when the moon is full or new are better days than others.

I have found that new moons are better than full moons when the rise and set times are the same as the sun, When the moon is full and out all night there is increased nighttime activity. Fish will feed actively all night. This especially true in saltwater where squid are translucent and glow at night. I have been Mahi Mahi fishing after a full moon where the fish were not eating because they had gorged on squid all night. This is only true on clear nights. Overcast nights are darker and will not cause this phenomena.

Check your fishing times before you plan a trip and you'll catch more fish. By knowing how the moon and fishing are related you will know when to fish.
