Magical Halong Bay Cruises In Northern Vietnam

By Leslie Mitchell

Halong Bay in northern Vietnam is one of those magical places on earth that feels like it belongs to another time. If you are visiting Vietnam, then you need to ensure that you check out Halong Bay cruises and make adding it to your itinerary a priority. Photos or video cannot do this gem justice, it has to be seen to be believed.

There are around 3000 islands that stick out of the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin in impressive formations. On a cruise of the bay and the islands, you witness the magical rock formations and can explore the sandy strips of beach there abouts. There are also many caves that have been set up for tourists to explore with lighting and boardwalks making it safe and easy.

Many of the islands are astounding in their unique formations. Once you see the islands it is easy to see why the bay translates from the local language as "where the dragon goes down into the sea." The emerald green waters that lap at the islands also add to the atmosphere of the bay.

In recognition of the astounding natural wonder that is to be seen here, Halong Bay has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 1994 it has been recognized as such and has therefore begun to attract the attention that it so rightly deserves. There are now plenty of agencies to help you with planning your visit and you can do this nearby or from Hanoi close by.

Halong City is the usual spot for embarking on one of these cruises. The town itself is not particularly exciting and for that reason, many people prefer to choose a trip that includes a sleepover on the boat. There are various choices of packages that you can select to meet your preferences.

The best time to visit is often thought to be between April and December, which are the warmer months. In reality, both the warmer season and cooler season have their benefits. In the cooler months you have to obviously face colder weather, but this is never below 10 degrees Celsius and the cool and mist often lend a wonderful ambience to the site.

During the hotter months of the year around July through to September, there can be tropical storms, which can affect scheduled boat trips. Even if you do take a tour during the colder months of the year, you can be sure that you will still be able to enjoy the experience. Although the weather does get cool, it is never very cold and you can expect an absolute minimum of 10 degrees Celsius.

Halong Bay cruises offer you the chance to experience one of the true gems of Vietnam. Once you see the natural formations and begin to explore the caves that have been illuminated and boardwalked for your safety and convenience, you will feel like you have been transported to a place inhabited by the gods, a dragon's playground. Make sure that your trip to northern Vietnam includes this memorable site and you will be truly glad that you did.
