Artificial Flies - Fly Fishing Equipment

By John Xavier

Without a doubt there would be nothing more complicated or confusing in fly fishing equipment than the artificial flies. Flies are the ones used to attract the fish's attention and play a major role in catching a fish, its probably more important then any other fly fishing equipment, so you need to get it right.

It was easy once to pick a specific fly, as the flies were specifically designed to do a job, as an example Trout flies were suit to catching trout, with salmon flies used to catch salmon, you get the picture. Now there is nothing straightforward about choosing the right fly for the right fish, it a complex hard thing to do. as you now need to consider that specific flies can now cater to the varying diets of a particular fish.

Something that will confuse a beginner is that categories of US fly types are named differently than their British counterparts, As well you now need to consider the differences now, for example a trout fish does not only have a singular trout fly, but also flies that imitate frogs, worm e.t.c

As an example for the difference in regions in the United States what are call dry flies are called dries in the UK.

Even though there is a difference in the names, they can will normally be found in the same set of sub categories. If we use dry flies as an example, the sub-category of many flies will be found in both categories.

Flies come in a widely different size range, from #2 to #22 with the former being the largest. So its not just the different types its also the different sizes that you need to consider.

Not to worry though as the confusion can be resolved by a good advice from reputable and experienced fly fishing equipment vendors. It is always a good idea to ask them when in doubt of which type of fly to buy when one goes fly fishing
