Trout Fishing and How To Do It Well

By Jacquelynn Shroyer

One of the first things you need to do in order to be successful when you fish, is to learn the traits and quirks of the fish you want to catch. The reason for this is you'll know that particular fish better. Trout fishing almost demands you learn about them because they are smart and well-equipped creatures. You can't approach fishing for them in any old way, and knowing nothing about how they operate dooms you to chronic failure. If you want to be successful fishing for trout, learn and apply the three tactics we will tell you about in the rest of this article.

It's normal in nature for an animal to have native abilities that will allow it to protect itself. And brown trout are no exception, as are other fish, and in this case it's their exceptionally sensitive lateral line. This line serves as a pressure transducer and consists of nerves that go along their body. What this means is that the nerve line is pressure-sensitive. In fact, it's so finely-tuned that a trout knows when someone is walking along their water way. We kid you not. Watch someone who catches a lot of trout. You will see that they are very careful as they approach a body of water where they hope to find trout. They walk softly, or even crawl, to get to their destination. Someone who is new to trout fishing won't know about this ability of trout to sense them and will walk as they normally do. Of course, some newbies can't wait to try out their hip waders, and will head right into the water! They never figure out why they didn't catch any trout, even after trying their hardest for the whole day.

If your goal is to be a great trout fisher, then it's important that you study and learn their habits. The first thing to learn is that trout, by their natural inclinations, hang out in water that is more oxygenated. Therefore, it's to your benefit to analyze that fact in relation to the oxygen in the water where you are going to fish. There will be more near the surface, and agitated water has higher oxygen levels. It's not hard to tell if a spot of water is still or moving about. When you see obstacles in the water, check to see if the water is swirling about. How about faster running water rather than slow moving water? Being able to spot signs of trout habitation is an easy skill that comes with experience and accumulated knowledge. You may not think that moon phases will affect trout but it does, and you can find high activity when the moon is in the right places in its phases. Certainly, you will have to be on the water or close by, as well as fishing if you want to reap the benefits. Weather is another factor that affects fish and trout in particular. You need to recognize the weather conditions that will play a role in the dissolved oxygen in the water. Plus, it is harder to go after trout on a bright and sunny, clear-blue sky kind of day. Because of their strong senses, you might be blown away at how simple it is for them to hear and see you coming. You should not make any noise and do your best not to be seen because believe it or not, they can see you standing on the bank.

If you plan your fishing trip for after sundown, either at a new site or at home, you may have the opportunity to catch the best brown trout you've ever seen. It's all a matter of what the weather is like now and has been doing recently. When conditions make it difficult for the trout to feed during the day, they will come up at night to feed when they feel safer. If the nighttime temperature falls into the lower 70 degree range, your success factor is even better. So if you have your sights set on larger fish, then give them what they want which are bigger minnows. If the oxygen level of the water surges, the fish will begin a massive feeding If you have started using bigger minnows as your bait, this is the conditions where you could have great results.

In accordance with the body of water, there are many different factors that play a role on the water level. If a particular area has had a notable rainfall, the water levels in streams and creeks will rise up. This is an optimal time to go trout fishing, for a number of reasons. First of all the amount of oxygen in the water will be higher which leads to increased activity in the fish. The increased water level will present a better defense against natural predators. After the rainfall and water levels are higher, trout will feel more protected, thus the reason they tend to move around more. These are just a few tips that many trout anglers may not know about. But, now you do and you can make use of them and get a hold of a higher number of the elusive trout.

And another factor in this is the drag created by the line in water. Each of these above factors has an effect on the way your bait will be presented to the trout, and how natural it will look to them. You can, of course, reduce the drag your line experiences in the water by using a longer pole and smaller diameter line. It's like the game dominoes. Each choice you make affects everything else you do. You change one item and everything changes. This is how you refine your gear and tackle, plus technique, so you can catch the kind of trout you want. This is true for any type of fish you wish to catch. The nice thing about trout fishing is that your initial investment isn't large. Nevertheless, you will have to "spend" time learning the ins and outs of trout fishing if you want to be successful. Many things you will not intuitively know and will have to learn by studying. After you know what you're doing, and have done your preliminary research, your confidence in your abilities will be high.
