Building With Wooden Canoe Plans

By Elinor Tran

In a world which is being largely taken over by synthetic materials, there is still a place for wood. Wooden canoe plans let any reasonably competent worker build one at home. The plans make this a snap.

Making one yourself is much less expensive than buying, particularly because labor costs would be ignored. Cheaper local materials could be used. Any necessary equipment is usually available or may be borrowed when needed.

Making a wooden canoe is a good project for a youngster. Once complete there is the satisfaction of using it on trips or for fishing. Even mistakes are a good learning experience, which teach persistence. This is a good way to get a youngster away from the computer or TV into the outdoors.

There may be concerns that the final product will not be safe or last long. An anxious parent need not be concerned. The plans will be safe if made properly and the wood can be treated to enhance longevity of the final product. Even ash which, although strong and flexible, rots quickly when wet, will last indefinitely if properly preserved.

If preferred. Fiberglass can be applied externally. Or perhaps the wood can be impregnated with a suitable epoxy resin (just as state-of-the-art wooden boats are treated) in order to combine ease of construction with strength and durability. Realistically, a simple layer of the correct marine paint, or varnish to bring out the beautiful grain, is cheapest and perfectly adequate.

Safety should be a priority and safety equipment such as a life vest should be provided and used. Accidents can easily happen on the water and rules should be followed to ensure everybody stays safe. Life itself is full of dangers and awareness and preparedness are important.

Whether the builder is an adult or a youngster, making something useful is very therapeutic, the fact that the end result will take you into nature is a plus. wooden canoe plans are a good way to get the best of both.
