When Bass Fishing You Need The Best Lures
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Remember, you will catch nothing if you are not prepared and try to go bass fishing without the best lures for the occasion. If you are fishing in primarily deeper waters and lakes, you will probably do well with crank bait lures that work in most any depth, or pigskin jigs for the really deep waters. If shallower waters or surface fishing is your bag, then spinner baits and top water lures will work well. You need to gear your equipment toward the environment in which you will be fishing, or you won't have too much luck.
Tail spinners are great lures because they move in the water and create intense vibrations that the bass sense and immediately go for. Precision-tuned lipless crank baits also work really well when you are trying to pull the bass from their hiding places deep in the rock crevices because they also leave a wake of intense vibrations that the fish just can't resist; proving once again that for the best bass fishing, you need the best lures for the situation.
Another factor that is just as important in bass fishing as having the best lures, and that is making sure you have taken into consideration the colors in the lures that you will be using. Bass have a hard time resisting the brightly colored pigskin jigs and that combined with the vibrations that they put out, pull the fish out of hiding every time. Color is an important factor in catching bass and you should remember that if you are fishing on a bright day, then use light colors in the lures; and the reverse is also very true, that if the day is overcast, then use darker colors.
There are hundreds of types of lures out there on the market today, and a little research is needed if you are to become somewhat of an expert in bass fishing and know the best lures to use. People just learning the ropes are usually steered toward crank baits because they are easy to use and very effective because they resemble bait fish or crawfish. Spinner baits come in a variety of colors, resemble bait fish, and are used to capture bigger bass. Vibration lures are the tail spinners and crank baits among the many out there; a buck tail jig looks like a small food fish, and pigskin jigs are preferred for bottom fishing and look much like a crawfish.
Getting the right lures is important when you are getting started in bass fishing and learning the best lures, but you must be familiar with the area in which you will be casting your lines so you can make the best choices in what lures to use. What kind of fish frequent that area?----small mouth, large mouth, spotted bass?-----and how deep is the water, what is the motion of the water, how fast, and what will the weather be like? All these factors play important parts in deciding the success of your venture.
Bass fishing is a thrill for those participating because you have the beauty of the wild around you, the excitement of possibly hooking a trophy sized fish, and the ultimate heart pounding fun of the hooked fish fighting literally for its life on the end of your line making you use all the fishing skills you possess to capture that fish. As far as bass fishing is concerned the sky's the limit when you have the best lures you can find, combined with the thrill of the sport----there's not much that can beat it.

Texas Coast Drifting Tips and Techniques
Why is fall better for drifting than other seasons? Fall brings change ranging from cooling temperatures to dropping tides. Falling with the tides is migrating bait fish that have relaxed within protected backwaters and saltwater marsh all summer long. Trout and redfish gang up and attack the fleeing feasts-all within driftable waters.
Structures which attract fish are the place to be when specking for trout and redfish, according to Captain Cody Maddox who drifts along the drops and holes of the upper West Bay.
"When you're fishing holes in the shell, you're talking working a very small area, usually about 7 feet surrounded by 3 foot deep water. I like to drift with brown lures around reef points and shell humps as well as holes and drops," Maddox tells us.
For his fall drift fishing, Maddox favors ? - 1/8 ounce riggings with soft plastic. When fishing deeper water, he tends to switch to a 3/8 oz head instead. A brown lures fan, Maddox says that he gets the best results with limetreuse, chartreuse and plum as well as with morning glory.
"If I have any great fall fishing tips to share, this is it," says Maddox. "I work my bait fast right over the bottom and then let it sit for a moment. If that doesn't get a bite, I try working it slower just off the tip of the shell - often with a weedless hook setup; sometimes just a little change gets results."
Bastrop fishing guide Captain Randall Groves tells us that he prefers fall for drifting. "I do best in muddy streaks along the upper coast. When temperatures get colder and the water becomes clearer, that's the best place for me on the upper coast."
Captain Groves tends to focus on drifting areas with deep shell as well as muddy creeks and bayous. "I'll usually drift deeper shell areas in autumn, but when it gets windy I have good luck in creeks and bayous."
Focusing on retrieval is one of the fishing tips Groves offers. "You'll hear a lot of people saying you should use a soft plastic and fish slow in fall and winter, but personally, I haven't found slow to be the best approach. I look for a reactionary bite instead of a hungry bite. You can get results by going slow, but I always do best working my lures faster in cold water."
"I rig my soft plastics with ? ounce and 3/8 ounce lead heads and use a very whippy rod like the Laguna Texas Wader III to work them through the water column."
"I use a trolling motor a lot to control my drift in fall," says Matagorda Bay guide Captain Dwayne Newburn. "A trolling motor especially helps when fishing around a group of working birds." Newburn refers to a common occurrence in fall when gulls are feeding on bait fish that are getting pushed up by feeding speckled trout and redfish below.
Captain Newburn is also a deep shell autumn angler, adding that he prefers to hit the dips and indentations of shell pads when drift fishing in the fall.
"When drifting, I do well with DOA Shrimp and Cajun Thunder Popping Corks. I'm also a fan of Norton Sand Eel Jr. with laguna shrimp and Saltwater Assassins with new penny and native shrimp," says Newburn, who prefers 1/8 oz jig heads with his soft plastic brown lures in shallow water and ? oz heads in deeper waters.
Captain Danny Neu, a Lower Laguna Madre guide is an avid autumn fisher. "It's one of my favorite times to fish, especially for large speckled trout. The bait fish head out of the bays and there aren't as many of them around, so you've got to hug the shoreline for miles sometimes, but when you come on a cluster of them, you know for sure that you've got trout and redfish right there," say s Neu.
On a normal day of drift fishing in fall, Neu typically spends the morning hours looks for bait activity in deeper water. "In colder water temperatures, I'll start drifts in deeper water before moving to shallower areas when the sun beams overhead and warms the shallows."
When asked which lures he ties on in the brisk temperatures, Neu chooses topwater plugs hands down. "I'll throw topwaters from the boat all day for trout and redfish in fall; they flat-out work!"
Neu throws smaller plugs like the super spook jr. on the lower coast. "I like to keep one rod rigged with a super spook jr. and the other rigged with a soft plastic." When throwing soft plastics, red and white Brown Lures is his personal favorite.

GPS Changes The Way You Look At Navigation
Monday, September 28, 2009
The invention of the compass changed navigation and made it possible for explorers to always know which direction they were heading in. Maps of the early earth helped us to keep track of where we were and where we wanted to be.
In modern times, we are lucky enough that we never really have to go back to the way things were. GPS is a new type of technology that stands for Global Positioning System. It allows us access to maps and locations that can be stored digitally in the form of a gadget about the size of a mobile phone.
Some of the fancier cars out there have GPS systems built into the dashboard which makes getting around even easier. Just key in where you want to go and you'll get a visual map marking the exact route you should take. Voice directions make following the map even easier.
Those who have been lucky enough to experience the joys of travelling in a vehicle with GPS will be able to testify as to how simple it makes navigation. When you have a digital map in front of you with the route already set out, you can't go wrong. With voice commands, you'd have to be an idiot to get lost.
Advancements in important fields like science and technology means human beings are constantly discovering ways of making life easier and more functional. Upgrades of things like computer chips and mobile phones means more technology can be fitted into smaller gadgets. GPS handheld devices are the smallest versions of maps and compasses we can use today.
GPS devices are not only useful for finding set places. They can also be used to find other GPS devices in a certain area. If more than one person has a GPS handheld, they can track the locations of others in public places, making trips to the park or zoo with the kids more assuring knowing that you will always know where they are.
GPS will be a very valuable possession for anybody who loves the outdoors. Activities like hiking, mountaineering, off-roading or anything out in the open can be made so much more enjoyable with a GPS handheld. Whether in your car or on you at all times, you'll never get lost again.

Get That Fishing Edge on the Texas Coast
Sunday, September 27, 2009
One of my favorite marks to key on are the grass lines, especially those found in the southern portion of Baffin Bay. What you are looking for here is where the grass goes from being very dense to not growing in very shallow water. The transition is usually quite visible as it becomes a sandy white bottom, something to look for on clear and sunny days.
Depth changes are another area to look for in addition to the shallow water grass line changes. These can be a very subtle change as the grass goes from dense to very sparse while only changing in depth a few inches. This transition is harder to spot but can be very productive as redfish love these areas. It provides few hiding places for the crabs and other species that redfish feed on, so you will usually find some quality fish hanging around these areas.
Once you have spotted a key grass line, the next step is to focus on your retrieve. I typically start off fast and then work slower and slower until I find what they like. Often times you will get a reaction strike with the fast-steady retrieve, which is a nice immediate result. Mix in a "wave" motion with the fast or steady technique by raising and lowering your rod. This technique has worked very well for me, but the key thing is to keep experimenting. Some people may work their lure extremely slow, dragging it along the bottom with great results. Just remember to pay attention to what works so you can use it in the future.
In addition to the grass lines, be on the lookout for potholes that range from a few feet to yards across. The edges all around the sides of the potholes are very important as small fish will hang around looking for food here. Larger predator fish are usually nearby. Baffin Bay is home to many of these potholes, especially rocky ones with steep drop offs that plunge down 8-9 feet. I like bring out the old Bass fishing tactics here when working these structures and edges.
One of the techniques that I have brought over from Bass fishing is to use short and quick hops, with various speeds of retrieve. When using this method I prefer to use a Devil Eye (made by Brown Lures) Texas rigged on a 1/4 oz bullet sinker weight. This saltwater fishing lure has been effective on Bass as well, and works great when slowly bouncing along those potholes and rocky drop-offs. I think that the large eye on the lure also gives a strong target for fish, which is why it gets so many aggressive strikes when fishing with this method.
Winter fishing is looking promising this year based on how the weather looks so far. The dove and ducks are already moving around down here in South Texas so come on down and we'll hook up for a great outdoor adventure.

Black Drum: The New Spring Target In Texas Fishing
"Black drum make their annual migration when the water temperatures get into the sixties; anywhere from late February to late April. You find them starting to congregate in the channels in great numbers," says Laporte, Texas pastor Mark Redd. An avid black drum fisher, Redd angles for drum at Galveston's North Jetty each spring.
"In the past couple of years we've been catching black drum weighing as much as 60 pounds! I find the best bait for fishing on the bottom where you'll catch the really big ones is cracked crab. I crack off the top shell and halve the meat; it works like a charm for black drum," Redd continues.
Captain Jake Reaves says that some of the best texas fishing for black drum is the upper coast, which he works in his guided charters. "The black drum run is an exciting time for me. It's an opportunity to get out of my waders for once and sit back in the sun and do some more relaxing fishing. I usually get about 20 fish a day when angling in the channels and other transitional zones during the black drum run."
As for gear, Reaves chooses circle hooks, 4-8 ounce egg weights and 50 lb test for black drum. According to Reaves though, the single most important thing is getting the bait to the bottom quickly. "I tend to use heavier weights so I can get my bait right down to the bottom where the biggest black drum are," says Reaves. Once he gets a bite, the 50 lb test lets him quickly land his fish and get his line back in the water.
There's even good news for anglers who don't have access to a boat: all of the indicate that some of the best black drum spots are easy to get to even for the landlocked. "We see a lot of people catching black drum across from the boat launch and at the pier by the Texas City Dike," says Mark Redd. Captain Jake Reaves adds that Sylvan Beach Pier and Sea Wolf Park Pier are also excellent spots. In the lower coast, texas fishing experts indicate that the Aransas Pass Jetty and the Fin & Feather Pier, both located in Aransas Pass are good places to catch black drum during the annual run as well.
Experienced black drum anglers say that if you plan to catch and release these fish, it's a good idea to "vent" the larger fish to give them a better chance of survival after release. This is done by depleting their air bladders before releasing the fish. texas fishing enthusiast Mark Redd tells us that he's seen all too many black drum die after release as they try and fail to swim downwards, hampered by their inflated air bladders. "Just take a needle and gently insert it at a 45 degree angle under a scale just at the tip of the pectoral fin to vent the trapped gases." A good tip to keep in mind for what the say is shaping up to be a record black drum season this spring.

Use the Right Trout Fishing Lure
Saturday, September 26, 2009
If you are out to catch pan fish or bass then you might have some luck with some of the many artificial baits. For instance, the artificial crawfish gets a lot of hits. The size is important. If you choose a smaller bait then you will usually (but not always) catch smaller fish. The upside is that a smaller bait is easier to cast. Of course, the larger trout fishing lure might catch some monster fish, but can sometimes be cumbersome to cast.
Another popular trout fishing lure is the spoon. Spoons are easy to use and come in a variety of colors and sizes. Different fish will prefer different patterns. Brown trout have a hankering for the solid gold spoon. Sometimes they will go after bright spoons if they are predominately gold. Rainbow trout, on the other hand, prefer the solid silver lure. They will also scarf down silver spoons with red stripes.
Brook trout on the other hand might not bite unless you use a copper lure. They like a trout fishing lure that has a touch of blue or green speckled in. Of course, even if you have the ideal trout fishing lure, you'll never catch a fish if you just let the lure dangle in the water. You need to make effective attractor movements too.
Trying Artificial Flies or Noisy Lures
The general rule of trout fishing is to be quiet. Nothing is worse than belligerent passerby spooking your fish. However, some fisherman actually swear by the noisy trout fishing lure. These lures emit a sound that supposedly attracts fish. Other fisherman think the noisy trout fishing lure is a gimmick, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try if nothing else works.
Some fisherman use nothing but artificial flies when they trout fish. An artificial fly can be an excellent trout fishing lure. This is especially true if it is fished appropriately. Dry flies are great for river fishing. By making slight flicks with your rod you can easily imitate the movements of real insects.
The approach of moving your lure is important no matter which type you use. A good rule of thumb is to start moving your trout fishing lure slowly through the water. You can then increase stripping or jigging speed until you find a pattern that seems to fool fish.

That's A Brown Corky Fatboy Lure For You!
All ten pounds of you cruises along the temperate flat soon reaching your familiar feeding ground-a distinct patch of boggy mud and elevated oyster shell. Approaching it sparks memories from seasons ago. Pastimes of gorging yourself with jumbo sized shrimp and feasting over endless schools of finger mullet come to mind and fuel your hunger.
You get into your favorite spot, right where the shell bed meets the mud and wait. Before long, a tempting six inch mullet comes along, oblivious to your presence.
Immediately, you propel at full speed and attack; exploding the waters surface. The six-inch mullet is devoured instantly and lays to rest in the yellow interior of your mouth. You slowly sink back to the warmth of the mud bottom.
Only a moment later you see another one; this one looks like it's wounded. An easy catch, you chuckle to yourself as you prepare to pounce.
Without hesitation, you spring at the mullet, quickly catching it in your jaws - that was easy, you think; at least until it starts fighting back!
A forceful shake dislodges your prey, but somehow you're still being pulled upwards and you become too tired to fight back against the pull of that Boga caught in your lip.
"10 pounds!" is yelled by a man bundled up beneath layers of outerwear.
Two other men surround your beastly exterior. Cameras flash.
Then it's over as quickly as it began and you're back in the water, free but utterly exhausted.
"Courtesy of a Corky Fatboy!" is faintly heard as you dash back to the warming protection of your feeding ground.
If this is how a trophy trout really understood us when we talked, they'd know that in being tricked by the lure, they were making an angler's dream a reality.
When word broke out that James Wallace broke the state's speckled trout record, an infection had spread across the gulf coast; fishermen turned to an arsenal of Corky's, a slow sinking soft bait, when hunting for the trout of their lifetime. Packing the size of a topwater and the wobble of a broken-back, the tempting attraction of a slow retrieved Corky in winter is just flat out effective for trophy specks.
"It got crazy when Wallace caught that fish," states B&L Corky founder, Paul Brown. "Anglers poured into our shop and literally bought every single Corky off the shelf." Even after so many years, this Corky craze hasn't slowed in the Brown family's Houston-based shop.
Port Mansfield fishing guide, Captain Mike McBride definitely knows a thing or two about Corky's and uses a unique retrieve to fool lower coast specks.
"Corkys are worked differently across the coast, but I try to pop the knot off, when I'm working Corky's while trying to keep up with the slack." Contrary to the popular belief of working Corky's "slower than slow", McBride works his soft baits aggressively. "The whole attraction of working an original Corky is unpredictable movements with the irresistible pause," states McBride.
Matagorda trophy trout guide Captain Jesse Arsola tells us that he has a specific technique for working Corkys saltwater fishing lures.
"When you're dealing with trout who are in an aggressive mood they'll bite just about anything. However, those times when you have to work at it to get them interested, that is when your technique really matters."
"If I use a Corky, I'm usually using a counting system. I keep track of how long it takes the lure to hit bottom, then I vary the amount of time I allow my Corky to sink before I pull out the slack. From there, it's just a matter of identifying what count you tend to get bites on. This is a really easy way to figure out just where in the water column the trout are feeding."
Captain John Havens, a tournament angler from Clear Lake, Texas favors chartreuse, white, and gold sided Corky Devil and a rather routine retrieve.
"All you have to do is to make sure you keep in constant contact with the lure so you can tell when you have even the littlest nibble," Havens says. He lifts the rod and gives it one or two twitches before letting his lure fall, the only variation this expert angler uses in his retrieve.

Features Of Good Fishing Lakes
Thursday, September 24, 2009
Once you have uncovered what type of fish you wish to fish for, you'll require to check the locations of the fishing lakes. Many of the optimal fishing lakes are in remote locations due to the fact that pollutants are not as rapid to enter these lakes than they are at lakes located near major populations. As numerous of the good sporting fish require cleaner water, you'll ofttimes have to go to remote locations to get the optimal. If you are willing to compromise on the quantity or type of fish, you can find fishing lakes that are closer to cities and major towns.
Plus to general location and type of fish in the fishing lakes, you will want to think of the landscape around the lakes. In the case of remote fishing lakes, there are some dangers associated with fishing. These may include snake bites, bear attacks and wolves in the locality. If you are arrangement on departing to highly remote fishing lakes, you need to ensure you are taking the necessary precautions to protect yourself and anyone who is fishing with you. If you want to go on a fishing adventure into the wilds, its proposed that you go with a good tour guide, as they'll know how to access the best fishing lakes, know the fishing holes, and know how to avoid any dangers that may be in the state.
When fishing, especially in remote areas, you'll want to make sure someone in your group has a GPS. This is especially important for those who don't own cell phones. As many GPS units now include emergency features built in, support will be able to locate and get to you if some thing were to happen.
When projection a fishing voyage to popular fishing lakes, you'll want to make sure that your fishing license is in order, as rangers and local officials in the area are known to do check points and watch for those without a license. While this is less common in remote locations, the penalties and fees may get quite extreme if you are caught without the proper documentation.

Searching for the Best Trout Fishing Lure
You might want to consider the crawdad imitation. This can be an effective trout fishing lure. They come in a variety of sizes. The smaller lures are easier to cast. These will often get gobbled up by pan fish. Sometime they might even catch bass. The larger artificial baits will catch bigger fish.
Brook trout prefer the plain copper spoons. Particularly those with a hint of blue or a touch of green. Of course, even if you have the perfect trout fishing lure for species of fish you are trying to catch, you might not catch a thing. This is because the lure is only part of the equation. Presentation is equally important. You must learn to jig and strip the trout fishing lure in a way that attracts fish.
Other Fish Attraction Methods
Most anglers are of the opinion that absolute silence will improve the outcome of any fishing expedition. However, there are some lures out there that actually make noise. The reasoning is that noise from under the water doesn't affect fish like noise from out of the water. The noise emitting trout fishing lure is said to get the attention of otherwise uninterested fish.
Some fisherman use nothing but artificial flies when they trout fish. An artificial fly can be an excellent trout fishing lure. This is especially true if it is fished appropriately. Dry flies are great for river fishing. By making slight flicks with your rod you can easily imitate the movements of real insects.
There are a variety of philosophies when it comes to moving a trout fishing lure through the water. You might want to try the slow approach, especially in slow or still water. However, the occasional quick twitch is sure to get attention. Finding the right technique is a matter of trial and error.

Seadoo Safety Tips
Wednesday, September 23, 2009
The first rule of safety in riding your pwc is to always wear a properly sized and fitted life jacket, or PFD (personal flotation device). If you you're going to be riding all summer, it just makes sense to spend some time shopping for a life jacket that is comfortable enough that wearing it isn't a hassle. That way, you are more likely to keep it on, which is the only way it can do its job and keep you afloat if you become unable to keep yourself afloat. Make sure that you plan ahead for any passengers and make sure that an appropriately sized and approved life jacket is available for anyone riding with you.
Second on my list of tips, but actually the most important to my mind, is to never mix alcohol and pwc riding. Operating a seadoo under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal, but it is an extremely dangerous proposition, not only for you, but for any other boaters and swimmers within range of your pwc. Cold beer and summer camping are a pretty popular combo, but keep the beer for after enjoying your day out on the water.
In my opinion, riding a Seadoo PWC is a day time sport. Although most machines are equipped with lights as is required by the law, it is much more dangerous to ride a Seadoo at night. Water hazards such as rocks and driftwood are nearly impossible to see at night. Be safe and ride during the daylight hours.
Another important safety tip to keep in mind is keeping your weight and passenger load under the recommended loads for your pwc. Most seadoos are designed for two people. Carrying extra weight changes the flotation and maneuverability of your seadoo, and is dangerous for everyone on the seadoo. If you need to transport extra passengers, consider towing a pull-tube, and make sure that you have a responsible spotter behind you that keeps a safe eye on the additional passengers being towed.
If you love the sport of seadooing as much as I do, then do yourself a favor and keep it safe. Taking unnecessary risks is just not worth having an accident. Even though boating is a very popular and accessible summer activity, don't forget that there are substantial risks involved, and making safety a primary concern will just make your boating season and that of everyone around you, a lot safer.

Winter Fishing Tips to Give You an Edge
One of the first areas I look for are grass lines. Baffin Bay, especially the south shoreline, has many areas where the grass lines make strong transitions and stop in shallow water. Typically in these areas you will see a change to a white sandy bottom from the dense shoal grass found elsewhere. On a good, clear day with high visibility the contrast from these transitions sticks out like a sore thumb.
Another type of grass line that is a little more subtle often occurs on a depth change. As an old Bass fisherman, it took me a while to realize that a depth change in the Laguna Madre was not necessarily a three to four foot drop into a channel. In fact, many of the ones I see that will change fish behavior are as little as two or three inches. The grass line I refer to here is a transition from the longer dense grass to a sparse short grass in the shallower water. This is redfish heaven as it seems to give small crabs and shrimp a false sense of security while leaving them virtually exposed to any predators swimming nearby.
There are all sorts of techniques you can use once you have picked out a target. I typically like to start with a steady and fast retrieve and try to get a quick strike from a predator fish. Sometimes incorporating a "waving" motion with this speed works for me as well. There usually isn't one right way of doing this, and what works well in one situation may not work in another. This is why you should experiment and try out different motions, retrieval speeds and other variations until you discover what works.
Potholes are another one of my favorite grass line features. These are often small, but sometimes can be several feet across, so be looking for both sizes. Smaller baitfish love to hang around the edges where they can keep an eye on the openings, so there is usually a bigger fish somewhere nearby waiting for the surprise attack. Some times these edges are smooth, but often in Baffin Bay they are steep and rocky, with the rocks sometimes reaching out past the surface and then going deeper than you are tall. This is another situation where some old-fashioned Bass fishing tactics can come into play. Key on these areas and work around the edges, but be careful to not lose your lure on the rocks.
I've always been an advocate of slower to moderate retrieves on soft plastic fishing lures like Devil Eyes by Brown Lures. Short, quick hops in varying combinations with pauses in between have been my bread and butter ever since I started seriously fishing saltwater. It's one of the things I brought with me from Bass fishing. A Texas rigged worm on a 1/4 oz. or less bullet sinker was definitely a go to lure for me. That style of slow bouncing has carried over and worked very well for me. I use this tactic when fishing potholes and rocky dropoffs. It seems to give the fish plenty of time to focus on the target and hopefully, with just the right twitch or jerk, you can trigger an aggressive strike. Again, vary your retrieve and REMEMBER what it was you did that triggered it.
The weather has been very cooperative and the winter fishing looks to be very good this year. We have already seen a few small flocks of teal, while mourning and white wing dove are everywhere. Give us a shout and we'll "hook" you up for your next Outdoor Adventure.

Costa Rica's Incredible Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Arribada
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
The teenage olive ridley sea turtle was only 15 years old as she drifted 500 yards offshore in the warm, tropical eastern Pacific ocean off Ostional Beach in a small country that, about 500 years earlier, Christopher Columbus had discovered and named "Costa Rica", the "rich coast."
The moon was in its last quarter. The afternoon December rains had slipped away as she waited expectantly, unaware of the lunar effect bringing her near.
A dozen meters away, a second olive ridley sea turtle joined her, followed by a dozen, then hundreds, thousands, and soon tens of thousands, all waiting patiently. For billions of years the moon has silently passed its timeless phases that affect the world's tides-and today it was bringing her ashore this night, just as it had led her forebears to ancestral nesting beaches for more than 100,000,000 years.
Nature is forever mysterious. Just a few months ago, this turtle was swimming in the middle of the Pacific Ocean nearly 3,000 miles away. And the multitude of sea turtles now alongside her were scattered over more than a million square miles of ocean.
Although there was plenty of food far out in the Pacific, something had begun to stir inside her. Hundreds of thousands like her felt the same timeless need to return to Ostional Beach. They, and she, were all going back to where they had hatched.
Now, months after something inside spoke to her, she waited in the soft light just a few hundred meters from her destination. She had swum so very far but now the silent voice that had led her here told her to wait. She was ready. Over the many weeks and thousands of miles she had swum she had met many different male olive ridley sea turtles in the clear ocean waters and she had bred with several of them because, like her, they too were being affected by something unseen, a primeval force. Whatever it was, it was so compelling that her race had been returning to Ostional Beach since the days of dinosaurs.
This sea turtle was returning somehow to the very beach where had hatched in 1995. No one knows how an olive ridley sea turtle finds the exact beach where she started life. Ostional Beach is only a few hundred meters in length. Now part of Costa Rica's Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, it is maybe the most important olive ridley marine turtle nesting site in the world. Incredibly, the year this turtle hatched, perhaps 500,000 females had nested here in massive "arribadas."
Unfortunately, our sea turtle's mother will not nest at Ostional this year. For the last two decades, her mother had joined massive Ostional arribadas annually and she would have done so again except that she drowned in a shrimping net not fitted with an internationally required turtle escape device. Long-line fishermen killed thousands more in what is politely called "incidental catch" almost completely avoidable simply by using larger hooks. Untold thousands were killed terribly by eating plastic bags.
But, neither our turtle nor the tens of thousands alongside her know none of this. As they gather, they are now so many that it seems one could almost walk on their backs for a mile or more. They don't realize they were on earth long before there was a Tyrannosaurus Rex or that when they lay their eggs on this tiny wildlife refuge, men will lawfully raid their nests and take 1,000,000 eggs in return for protecting the rest of the clutches and preserving the species. They only know this: Ostional is their beach.
Then, though we do not know why, it happens. It is as though the same quiet voice that told them to come and provided unerring directions to a tiny sand beach thousands of miles away, the same silent command that demanded they wait offshore, now tells them it is time to come ashore. As quietly as they first appeared offshore, as silently as they gathered for days and weeks, their patience has been rewarded. They begin to come to the beach. A single olive ridley marine turtle is followed by a second, then another and another. Soon there are hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands---even more than that. All on a particular little beach. They come in increasing numbers all night. More arrive in the day. All day, day after day. It is the magnificent Ostional Arribada of Costa Rica. As timeless as the moon itself, it is the spectacular reaffirmation of life itself.

Weapon Which Is A Household Name
The Swiss army brand is quite a seeked after brand and it has very loyal fan following. The Swiss army produces these unique bayonets that interested one and all. Thus even though these Bayonets date back to a long time ago their popularity has not gone down, it is still a dream for an avid collector of Swiss army products to own one. These are now sold as army excessive items and are quite popular.
The bayonet is a part of the knife family. It is basically a knife and can be considered to be a spiked shaped tool that can be used in the battle ground. It was a rather innovative creation as it was specifically designed to fit on top of the muzzle of a gun such as a rifle or the like. This transformed the rifle into a spear like weapon in the case of running out of ammo.
Hence the bayonet served a great purpose for the Swiss Army and many other armies as well through out its history. It gave the soldier in action a last resort to engage in combat and defend himself or attack the enemy even after having run out of bullets. The bayonet was a very effective innovation back in the days when warfare was relatively simpler than what it is today.
Practically and unfortunately the demand for bayonets have fallen as modern-day warfare expertise] utilize trigger oriented rifles. Thus, these bayonets have now become antique pieces that are now sought after by collectors of Swiss army products and for those people who are passionate about it.
Advanced day warfare do not require the use of Swiss army bayonets. However, this doesn't mean that these bayonets are no longer utilized. In some countries it is still used but the significance has dropped. The fact that it can be used as an individual dagger gives it an edge and makes it a versatile weapon that have multiple purposes.
The Swiss army knives can fufil the purpose of an excellent utility knife. At the same time anyone equipped with a bayonet during combat is bound to have a sense of security as well.
Nowadays these Swiss army bayonets are available in auctions from those people who collected the original bayonets in the past and now they sell them off to make some money.
The standard bayonet has a vane length of 9.4 inches and a handle that measures 4.8 inches. Interested individuals can try their luck at the army surplus shops or browse for them through the internet.

The Experience of Fly Fishing Boats
Monday, September 21, 2009
However, now it can be hard to find a part of the river to fish. With so many waders out there it can sometimes seem impossible. This is why more and more fisherman are turning to fly fishing boats. Fly fishing boats offer many advantages over traditional river wading.
The Best Boat
Fly fishing boats allow fisherman to drift right by all those shore fisherman. They allow you to find the pristine, untouched holes in the river. Perhaps the best of the fly fishing boats, is the river drift boat. The drift boat excels in the river fishing found in western states.
Perhaps the most popular of the fly fishing boats is the drift boat. The drift boat is essentially a dory that has been converted for river use. These fly fishing boats have a flat bottom and sides that flare out. They ride high in the water and can spin around very quickly. This makes them ideal for maneuvering rapids and avoiding river obstacles. Many people use rubber rafts for river fishing, but rafts seem sluggish and hard to maneuver by comparison.
Of all fly fishing boats, the drift boat is a frequent favorite among fly fishermen. It is designed specifically for river fishing. The high sides help keep fishermen dry even in rapids. There is ample watertight storage to keep clothes and water sensitive items dry. They also provide a stable platform to stand on. Knee lock allow you to safely stand and cast even while racing down whitewater.
Of all the fly fishing boats on the market, drift boats are most suitable to rapids. They are by far the most maneuverable. They can turn on a dime. They are also much faster on the water than traditional river rafts. Although, drift boats will dent if rammed into large rocks, they can take a beating and are very durable.
The drawback to using a drift boat, is that you need a trailer to move it. You also need a boat ramp to launch it and remove it from the river. Additionally, they can bottom out in extremely low water.
Of all the fly fishing boats, drift boats are the most expensive. Of course, a quality drift boat can last a lifetime if it is well cared for. Even so, dropping five or more grand on a fishing boat is too much for many people. However, if you can afford it, you won't be disappointed.

When visiting the Gold Cost, public buses are the dominant form of public transportation. It is possible to arrange rail transportation between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, but there is no railway once you reach the Gold Coast. For information on the public bus system, you should obtain a copy of the Gold Coast transport planner. The planner will provide all needed information on bus times, routes and stops, which will assist you in planning your trip.
There are also many bike paths around Gold Coast and bikes can be hired from many local shops around the area, many will even deliver your bicycle right to where you are staying. If biking around is your thing then you will truly enjoy this option with over 600 km of bike paths in the Gold Coast region alone.
The Gold Coast region also has taxi service, although this is not the ideal way to travel. Even though the taxi rated are fairly reasonable, the constant use of taxis as your primary means of transportation can be come overwhelming and expensive.
The most popular transportation method, in the Gold Coast area, is renting a car. Car rentals allow you the freedom to plan your vacation without any travel restrictions, and renting a car also helps to reduce the pressure when you are on vacation, since you dont have to worry about catching a bus or a taxi. How Did You Tie Your Fishing Knots
There are fourteen common sorts of knots employed in fishing, though numerous people only utilize the common fishing know known as the trilene knot. This is the knot that ties lures to standard fishing line, and is the first taught to those learning how to fish. The trilene knot is constructed by putting the line via the eye of the lure, wrapping the end of the line around main line many times, then passing the line through the loop that is formed between the wraps around the line and the eye of the lure.
Of all of the fishing knots, this is one of the easiest to tie, and by and large only takes an experienced fisherman a few 2nds to tie this sort of knot. Another merit of utilizing this knot over other fishing knots is that the knot upholds a great portion of the original line strength. A factor in this is the size of the eye of the lure, so make sure when picking your lure, you pick lures with eyes slightly larger than the knot size. This will give the greatest total of strength in the knot.
Another common sort of fishing knot employed is the uni-knot. This type of knot is very versatile, permitting it to be utilised in most cases. All the same, unlike the trilene knot, the uni-knot isn't known to have the same strength. As strength in fishing knots are exceedingly necessary, the trilene knot is more constantly utilized to ward off the knot from breaking.
Whenever you fish, you should pay close attention to your fishing knots. While a loose or inadequately tied knot will not give out on smaller catches, the large trophy fish may cause indecorously tied fishing knots to let loose or break. It's similarly necessary to try to desist lashing the same line more than once. If you have crimped line from having been tied, the strength of that section of line is compromised if you tie a second knot with it. You are optimal off cutting that portion of the line away and beginning with fresh line.

Making Homemade Carp Boilies And Choosing The Best Ingredients!
So in the beginning when considering bait at all, why start of with bait itself at all when it is far more productive by starting off with taking a much better look at the fish?! Relatively very few anglers understand carp in detail so it is no surprise they have little idea how their baits might possibly work to attract fish to take baited hooks inside their mouths " but if you understood this imagine the power this provides you with over anglers with little or no knowledge or insight regarding this incredibly vital aspect of fishing.
When speaking to many fellow anglers it is clear that the vast majority are dependant on expensive readymade boilies and pellets. When anglers are dependant on readymade baits they are completely at the mercy of others to decide their bait modes of action and competitiveness over other baits, and cost; which is not necessarily an ideal situation to be in. When you are dependant upon readymade baits instead of producing your own, your bait budget is to a very large extent decided by the pricing of readymade baits.
Why allow someone else to decide your fishing budget when you can do it yourself and save an absolute fortune?! Whether your readymade baits cost you 5 pounds or 12 pounds a kilogram you can undercut and vastly reduce this cost and still out-fish all those popular readymade baits " when you know how! Once again you need to know some of the most vitally important details of fish senses, and how to best exploit them to get most bites by leveraging various (endlessly varied) combinations of ingredients, special compounds, liquid foods, flavour components, oils etc.
Avoiding bait making mistakes can be avoided by learning from others who have the long experience over the years to refine their knowledge and bait making methods, thinking and insights etc. My 34 years of homemade carp bait making has gone through many changing levels of experience, feedback and changing awareness but well over 80 percent of all my homemade baits have caught from at least the first cast and mistakes are really only priceless feedback towards even better baits! Certain carp waters demand specific bait alterations because no water or fish stock or ecosystem is necessarily identical, and it is very important to know how to out-fish competing baits by leverage of unique bait substances to achieve extra edges over them in many ways.
Bait-making beginners usually make the most common mistake of falling into the trap of thinking like an angler and relying on personal judgements and opinions about bait substances and flavours to formulate baits instead of starting off with the fish themselves (which is obviously where the true power is!) Avoid limiting your bait success by getting to know your fish very well indeed inside and out! By focussing on the fish in the first instance and not on bait substances you will be thinking like a carp and be able to get the edge over the majority who merely think like anglers.
Many very effective bait substances appear not to initiate a response from carp when applied to water on their own, but applied in combination with other substances very definitely have powerful effects in either many obvious or just as often much more hidden more subtle internal ways that work over a period of time after baits have been eaten! Many bait substances are not even used to trigger feeding or to attract fish directly but can make baits more noticeable to fish or more palatable or make them much more habit-forming! I laugh when anglers refer to their favourite flavours in terms of describing their baits because it often baits that smell of nothing discernible that can be the most productive for big wary fish. In bait terms, when you fully comprehend that carp are able to detect certain substances down to as little as a few parts in a billion in solution, then your dependence on your human perceptions and interpretations of your dull human senses looks very shaky indeed and you can see why it is not necessary for your senses and irrational human opinions to act as a guide in your bait-making and you do not need to be able to taste or smell your baits to be confident they work!
Carp are constantly evolving individuals able to sense new substances to various degrees even if foreign to their aquatic environment and so are able to monopolise new potential food sources " something we can exploit to maximum effect to catch more fish! Carp an be conditioned to respond to our baits in similar ways to dogs being trained to behave in ways their owner wants by rewarding them with snacks and designing unique new baits to provide both instant and long-term rewards certainly can condition their behaviours in our unique favour when regularly applied as well as affecting their future taste and smell preferences etc! You can choose specific ingredients, additives and liquids etc to manipulate carp modes of feeding or condition senses or certain modes of behaviours or exploit or adapt preferences leading to many more bites on your baits compared to other baits, so it really pays to choose wisely and find out more! (For far more information see my unique bait-making ebooks and bait secrets website Baitbigfish right now!)

A Review Of Anchor Rope
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Notwithstanding, getting a boat isn't as simple as that, as people who in reality have boats have found out. In fact, they require as much if not more maintenance than cars or other vehicles. And unless you reside by the beach or a lake, you will have to tow it there. In fact, the expense of sustaining a boat is shown in the two most common phrases in the trade. The first one is The two happiest days of your life will be the day you buy your boat, and the day you lastly sell it. The 2nd one goes "A boat is a great hole in the water that you throw money."
That doesn't mean that owing a boat isn't satisfactory. Otherwise nobody would. It just means that, like most rewarding things in life, it takes a good number of work. Notwithstanding it is completely worth it.
One of the things that should be paid peculiar attention to is the anchor, and its anchor rope. As everybody knows, the anchor is what keeps a boat in the same spot and also keeps it from being taken away by the wind or the current. It has to have a size, form and weight appropriate to the boat. Similarly, anchor rope should be appropriate for the boat, the anchor, the type of water that it is going to be used in, the depth of the body of water, and the winch or whatever mechanism the boat has for releasing and pulling the anchor.
A common misconception about anchor rope is that it should be attached to the stern of the boat. That is very uncomfortable and unstable, and it can even be extremely dangerous in bad weather. Anchor rope should be attached to the bow of the boat, which will give it more stability and will let the boat to negotiate the impacts of the waves much good.
Besides, anchor rope should be at least 5 times the estimated depth of the body of water where the boat will be. So, for a depth of 10 feet, the anchor rope should be at least 50 feet long. The extra length of the anchor rope takes into account the change in tide, as well as giving the boat a good number of freedom of movement without having to pull the anchor.
Lastly, for safety reasons, any anchor rope should have a mechanism that will release it in case of emergency. You will lose both the anchor and the anchor rope, but your boat wouldn't capsize as easily.

Running shouldn't be attempted in confined places, and is properly experienced in the open air. Even treadmills seem ineffective when compared to running outside, where the surroundings are continually changing and the air isn't thick with sweat. Keeping track of your progress when running outdoors used to be a challenge for some. It is no longer a problem. GPS running watches have exactly what you may require to go running in the open spaces.
GPS running watches are comfortable and hard-wearing. It should not be a problem to wear them even for long periods, and the watches will successfully survive many impacts and scrapes. Runners trip as do the rest of us, after all. Running watches keep track of factors regarding your running performance. The absolutely basic running watches include multi-lap stopwatch functions which let you examine your lap times for comparison. With merely an adjustable chest strap and wireless transmission, GPS running watches could monitor your heart rate. This provides you with the freedom to monitor your heart rate whenever you want; you won't be required to quit moving.
GPS helps you to find out your place in the world, within meters or even centimeters of where your feet are. With a little modification, GPS can be used to observe more information. By using your place and cross-referencing that with elevation tables, a GPS system could show your altitude, something useful for mountain climbers and explorers. Your rate of travel and direction could even be figured, by comparing point-to-point times and locations. The coolest advantage of owning GPS running watches is you are able to monitor where you are, wherever you are! You may want to look into the Garmin GPSmap 378 Receiver.
