Bass fish are found all over this planet in all kinds of watery haunts from the ocean itself to remote streams and hidden lakes, to that little neighborhood pond that you remember as a kid. They have been proven by time to be the most popular game fish above all other types, and not only are they fun to fish and catch, but they make for good eating as well.
The bass fish as a whole are divided into two main groups based on their affinity for the type of water they are found in; we have the marine varieties, and the fresh water varieties. The scientific name for the order they belong to is Perciformes which literally means "perch-like" fishes. That moniker was derived from the Middle English word "bars" which way back in English history meant "perch". It has come down through the ages and been modified to today's spoken word of "bass". When you see a large group of bass swimming together, it is called a shoal.
There a numerous types of bass fish found in all sorts of watery environments; from small streams and remote ponds and lakes, to the ocean itself. The two main types of bass are referred to as temperate basses and black basses of the scientific family Moronidae. The temperate basses are the striped bass and the white bass; while the black bass group contains the largemouth bass, small mouth, Guadalupe, and spotted bass.
Along with these types of bass fish are found many others that are known as bass even though they fall under different scientific categories. The examples of fish known to anglers as bass are called the Australian bass, black sea bass, and giant sea bass. A search of the bass family records will turn up many other types that fall under this category, but these are the main ones familiar to most fishermen.
Bass fishing is the most popular game fishing sport without a doubt, and there are legions of anglers who would attest to that. A whole industry has built up around the bass fish, and there are hundreds upon hundreds of online websites where you can go to get any bit of information you want about the world of bass fishing or join a forum to talk with other bass fishermen; as well as specialty sports stores that specialize in the sport. There are all kinds of boats designed just for bass fishing, lures, equipment, recreational lodges built near bodies of water that support bass---the list is endless.
In order to fully participate in the thrill and the excitement of the sport of going after bass fish, you really must experience it from atop a boat; and there are hundreds of styles, models, sizes and price ranges for bass boats. The average bass boat is 16 to 26 feet in length, made from fiberglass or aluminum, and by law---must have an electric trolling motor mounted on the bow. There are flat boats, electric boats, jon boats---there is a bass boat for almost everyone in every price range.
The sport of bass fishing is loved by many the world over and for very good reason; because the enjoyment of pursuing the bass fish is exciting in many ways. When you are totally outfitted and have a great little boat that you can park yourself on and just relax for the day on a remote lake or pond; or conversely are having the time of your life hooking and working a fighting bass fish on the end of the line----the fun is never ending and reaffirms the fact for you loud and clear just how much bass fishing is loved by the fishing world.
