By Steve Thorn

Easy to follow instructions for making a light-weight spoon lure.

Do you like using polymer clay fishing lures, but want to make them yourself? You will make your very own one of a kind fishing lure if you follow these instructions.

You'll wow family and friends with these wonderful lures that can be gifts, or use them on your own fishing trips! The following will show you how to make a tri-colored spoon that's very light.

How to make your own fishing lures from polymer clay:

1) Get a polymer clay for your spoon - choose any color you like. For your fishing lures you'll need three different colors

Step 2: Before continuing, be sure to condition your clay well. Roll it in your hands, bend, break and reroll the clay until it is soft, pliable and sculpted easily.

3) Form a ball with each individual clay portion. They shouldn't be any bigger than a marble or a gumball for this lure.

Step 4: With a rolling pin (you can also use an empty glass bottle) lightly roll each ball of clay until it is 1/4 thick.

5) Cut each oval section of clay into three sections of identical length once you've gotten then rolled down, and be careful when you do it.

6) Form two complete spoon shapes by bringing together a section from all three ovals and combining. The spoon must be vertically striped, so the middle will be one color, the left side a different color, and the right side a different color than any of the others. Reverse the colors for the next spoon shape.

Step 7: Lay the three pieces side by side, overlapping the edges slightly. Place a small screweye near each end of one clay oval. Now, place your second clay oval on top of the one which has the screw eyes.

Step 8: Once again, roll over the clay with a rolling pin to adhere all three pieces together.

9. Create your desired shape by cutting and trimming the edges of the clay. Now bake your tri-colored fishing lure by following the instructions that came on the packages of clay; be sure to have a cookie sheet that is used for this purpose only.

10. You can use a piece of old denim cloth or ultra-fine sandpaper to polish your clay spoon to a shine after it has baked and cooled according to the instruction. You may need to add lead sinkers to your spoon to give it the necessary weight in the water for it to be effective.

When you are just beginning to learn how to make your own fishing lures, polymer clay is the most comfortable of the mediums to work with. Polymer clay is easy to use, durable, and waterproof.
