Before you even think of using your brand new vessel out for a cruise on the water it is in your own best interest to undergo a boat safety class and have a boat safety inspection to check for the mandatory safety equipment. The US Coast Guard can give you with a list of mandatory and proposed boat safety devices.

Life jackets, or personal drifting tools as they are officially called, should be easily available for every passenger of the boat. They must also be adjusted to the built of the person who is meant to use them in case of an emergency. They must be in good working order with all the straps and clips situated properly and functional. It is a good recommendation to have them fitted to the individuals so that if needed they can be worn without much further adjusting. In some states there is a minimum age for which the putting on of a life vest is needed every time.

As a large part of boating safety there should also be present on board a recently inspected fire extinguisher. It should be clearly marked so that anybody can locate it if needed and get to it in time. There are varied kinds of fire extinguishers, engineered to extinguish different kinds of fires. For boating safety it is advisable to obtain a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are designed for putting out fires initiated or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.

As a last factor of boating safety, especially for boats with gasoline engines and particularly when the engine is mounted in the vessel, great wind circulation is vital.

Not only to keep away from any development of carbon monoxide, threatening the crew with poisoning, but also to prevent gasoline smoke from building up and turning into a dangerous fire hazard.
