Fishing is one of America's favorite outdoor sports and there are many different lures that can be used to snag the catch of the day. Most lures are plastic and can be bought at any local department store. Another type that is very popular is the wooden lure. These types of lures can be purchased or the fisherman can learn how to make wooden freshwater fishing lures out of everyday items such as an aluminum can and a peg type clothes pin.

These fishing lures can be found in just about any department store and can be found on web sites dedicated to fishing and sporting equipment. The prices vary, depending on the brand and size of the lure. There is a less expensive alternative to purchasing a store bought lure. With just a few supplies, a wooden fishing lure can be made in a matter of minutes. The following is one of the easiest ways to create a wooden lure.

1. Carefully cut an aluminum can. Flatten the aluminum into a square sheet. Use thick gloves when doing this. It doesn't take much for the thin material to cut flesh, causing bodily injury.

2. With metal shears, cut the sheet into a spoon shaped piece. Cut several in various sizes if different sizes of lures are going to be made. They can be anywhere from one to four inches, narrowing to one end. The outcome should look like a small prey fish.

3. The next step is to cut a slit in the head of a clothes pin, about a half inch deep. Add some strong adhesive into the cut and insert the aluminum fish into the slit.

4. A hole should be drilled for the gluing of the hook. The hook should be secured by an adhesive such as Super glue.

5. Cut the legs off of the peg style clothes pin. After drilling a hole from one side of the front of the lure, add beads with a straight pin to create eyes on the fish.

6. The final step is to paint the lure. Most fish tend to be attracted to bright colors such as red, orange and yellow.

It is very handy to be able to make freshwater wooden fishing lures. These can catch many fish without paying for the name brand lures that are sold nationwide. They can also be customized with feathers and spinning objects to attract even bigger fish.
