Say what you like about New York but one thing is for sure; you cannot get away from the city that never sleeps. Many people, some of who have never set foot in the city have their opinions about the city some true and some outrageously false. The common thread that runs through these stories is how crime is the rot in the Big Apple. But using some simple NYC safety tips it can mostly be avoided.
A few years ago the city was certainly a lot grimier but there has bean a clean up and most of the criminal elements have fled. But as with every big city there is still a little bit of crime that happens. Fortunately it can be avoided by taking simple precautions such as keeping valuables out of sight and being alert.
Getting around using public transport is how most people transit through the city. Purely because of sheer numbers as well as good security most of the modes of transport are considered relatively safe. The only exceptions are very late at night when there are fewer people around and trains that stop in stations in neighbourhoods that are considered slightly seedy.
If one takes a minute to observe commuters in the city the first thing that comes to mind is that they all seem to have the same purposeful stride when they walk. In addition they pretty much keep to themselves and do not engage strangers on the street unless it seems absolutely necessary. Runners in the famous park are asked to keep communal hours and avoid jogging alone down any lonely paths.
Tourists might feel slightly overwhelmed especially first time visitors. Best they take their cue from locals in terms of how to act in public from the locals. Openly showing that one is new in town opens up to possible trouble from petty thieves and small time con men who might try to take advantage of the situation.
Naturally women will have specific concerns that pertain to their safety above and beyond the normal stuff. When carrying a purse one is advised to hold it tightly close to the body. If going after dark take a cab as a precaution. Wait inside the lobby and ask the doorman to hail one for you.
These NYC safety tips are not meant to cause alarm. Rather they are a way to increase awareness and ensure every one who decides to take a bite of the Big Apple does so in a safe manner.
