Eventually It Looks That The Better Weather Is Imminent From The Clues In The Earth Today

By Jon Izzard

Mention it hushedly and with care - Spring may be knocking on the doors! I dropped my little lad to kindergarten this afternoon and in the driveways along the street there were definitely crocuses in flower. Also, daffodils look to be pushing their way into the fresh air as well as the bluebells at the end of my front garden. It's so marvellous, finally after the grinding vileness of winter after xmas, it appears as finally there is a motive to be chipper. And, bringing the time that I go back to the waterside and go angling may genuinely be here.

I have never been shy to say that I am, and always have been, a fair-weather angler. And especially since I haven't been angling in a very long time, having got the desire to start again there was no chance I was going to go out for an experimental trip when I'd have needed to wrap up like Captain Scott and scare myself forever. Also, I would not have wanted to pay out much money on bait and tackle if I was not sure that I was going to make a fair effort of it first.

It'd make sense for me to head out to the waterside with a friend, go Dutch on bait and tackle and hopefully be allowed to use a guest pass before I splash out on enrolling in the Birmingham Angling Association which is what is required to be permitted to go angling on the canals around here, as well as the rod licence that I will need from the Department of Environment. The 2 of those will be the fretful side of 50 before anything else, so I have to be sure that I will still be able to enjoy it.

One thing I am going to enjoy is dawdling about bait and tackle stores. I adore tiny, local, specialist stores who have the local knowledge, who can guide intelligently from first hand experience and be the best source of news about angling in the locale regarding what is being caught and where.

So, if it is correct that Spring is almost upon us (and it is a marvellous bright day today too) then I need to do what I have been promising myself for ages, arrange an outing with my friend, get to the fishing shop and go angling.
