By Jillian French

Planning a vacation to New York City has never been easier with the abundance of resources now available to the general public. Before the Internet became popular, tourists would have to book a trip through a travel agent, and depend on her expertise to decide the right package for the traveler. Now vacationers can plan, book and purchase tickets on their own through various websites as well as the option of using an agent. Self guided NYC tours can make for a fun and adventurous holiday, while still keeping within anyone's budget.

Walking in New York City

New York is a massive city, but deciding on a particular area to focus walking around on each day, will shrink the city down to a manageable size. New York offers several pre-packaged walking tours or ideas for places to go, in popular areas of the city. For example, if a visitor enjoys culture and food the Greenwich Village area provides a fantastic opportunity to learn about culture, the rich history of the city, and enjoy delicious food. Walking through this area show many popular tourist destinations, and visitors find samples of food from restaurants can be filling.

The Meatpacking district, include Chelsea Market offers an interesting history for travelers that is both unique and fun. Visitors can receive samples of food, and some say they can often replace a lunchtime meal. Chinatown, East Village and Manhattan all offer an abundance of experiences from music, food and architecture sightings that will keep any visitor happy.

Entertainment and Studio

Although many of these ideas are not self guided, they are recommended to take in if a visitor is interesting in TV production or entertainment. For those interested in television production, NBC Studios has a walkthrough of its station at Rockefeller Center, which shows the history of the station, TV production, and behind the scenes of television. CNN New York also offers a visit around its studios, and visitors can see news shows being taped, production values and even learn CNN's history. These are great ideas for those cold and rainy days.

Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden both have fun tours for sports fans and theater buffs. Madison Square Garden has a one hour tour that visits the area, theater space, team locker rooms, plus private suites, where visitors can learn all about the building. Radio City Music Hall also has a one hour visit, which goes through the concert hall, and down art deco designed lobbies; where travelers will learn its unique and fun history.

Bike Tours and Rentals

Bike tours for those more sports inclined travelers might be the way to go. The city offers both self guided and guided tours through the city, and many areas such as Central Park offer bike rentals. Travelers can find regular and tandem bikes to rent, as well as bikes for the kids. One bike rental shop, Pedal Pusher Bike Shop offers bike rentals and is located near Central Park.

Pub Crawls and Scavenger Hunts

New York has self guided pub crawl walks, in which travelers may visit popular drinking spots around the city. For the more adventurous, scavenger hunts are a fun and interesting way to see the city and locate treasure. Often, many of these tours have audio commentaries to help enhance the visitors experience of the city, so they can learn facts and information on its history of many locations. A lot of the tours begin at $3, as of 2010, but the prices may rise over time.
