Wanna try real fishing? Take up Fly Fishing

By Andy Craven

Fly Fishing has been around for ages. Even in medieval times people fished for their food. The sport evolved over the years to become one that requires great skills. Ask any fly fisherman and he will tell you just how addictive it can become.

There is a huge difference between fly fishing and other forms of fishing. In other fishing styles you use lures or even live bait to catch the fish but when fly fishing you use a fly that looks just like a real insect, the very insect they usually feed on. You mimic the natural movement of the fly using a much longer line. This allows you to imitate the natural movement of the fly as it travels across the surface of the water. The aim is to fool the fish in to believing it is a real fly.

As it is with bait so it is with the way you cast. When coarse fishing you cast and allow the bait to rest on the bottom or dangle on the end of a floating line but when fly fishing you cast and then pull the line back a number of times so as to make it look like a real fly as it moves across the water.

It has to be said that all types of fishing offer great rewards and satisfaction but fly fishing seems somehow closer to nature.

Fly fishing flies are made from natural materials while other forms of fishing use man made plastics and rubber. Your seasoned fly angler would tell you that the fish are much more likely to go for a naturally made bait and hence why they love it so much.

Of course with other forms of fishing you can simply visit your local pond or river but when fly fishing you will get the best results by traveling to the place where fish such as walleye, bass and trout live. Then it is your job to fool the fish in to believing your fly is real!

Alaska and Canada are wonderful fly fishing vacation spots. South American, Mexico and even Russia are fantastic locations and that beats visiting your local fishery any day of the week. Don't you agree?

People say that Chess is, and I quote, "The sport of Kings". Likewise Fly Fishermen would argue the same about fly fishing as it takes perseverance, skill and finesse. Try it and let me tell you, you will be hooked! Sorry I couldn't resist!
