Yacht Charters Idyllic Sailing In The Caribbean

By Thelma Kent

BVI yacht charters provide a charming and safe Caribbean sailing vacation adventure. The volcanic origin of the BVI (British Virgin Islands) lend them an exotic uniqueness. Among the most popular destination for charter yachts are Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Norman Island and the largest isle in the group, Tortola. Deep blue waters, balmy weather, amazing sea life, magical sunrises and sunsets, and a plethora of safe anchorages all combine to ensure an unforgettable and carefree vacation.

Anegada is a coral island, the only one in the BVI. Moreover, it is flat, not mountainous like the other islands. Anegada is Spanish for drowned island, this emphasizing its flatness. These features together with its protective reef, spectacular beaches, and undeveloped nature make it a favorite destination for many charter yachts. A safe anchorage can be found by Setting Point in Benders Bay.

Anegada is popular because it is largely deserted and unspoilt. It supports a permanent population of only about 200 people. The horse-shoe shaped isle has a total area of only 15 square miles. It is a short sail of only ten miles northeast of Virgin Gorda. Tourism and fishing are the main economic activities. The island is well-known by recreational anglers for its exciting bone fishing. It is unique for a number of reasons.

First, Anegada is the only coral island in the BVI. There is a beach running around the whole island. Notable spots include Cow Wreck Beach and Loblolly Bay Beach. Second, salt ponds provide a home to large flocks of flamingos. The island is also home to the unique Anegada Rock Iguana as well as several species of plants found only on this island.

Finally, unlike remaining islands in the group, Anegada is very flat. So flat, it is almost invisible from a distance. Its highest elevation is only about thirty feet above sea level.

In summary, bvi yacht charters allow vacationers to cruise in safe, easy sailing waters. The island group is both beautiful and distinctive. The scuba and snorkelling opportunities are world class. Safe swimming beaches, warm water and bucolic seclusion all add to the experience.
