Fly Fishing - More Than Just A Sport

By Orsen Taylor

What is fly fishing? Fishing is just fishing for most people. Throw some bait on a line, toss it in the water and wait for a nibble, but for fly fishing enthusiasts, it's so much more. An ancient angling method, fly fishing is a method that was initially developed primarily for catching trout and salmon. However, it is also currently used to catch pike, carp, bass, and other species.

In fly fishing, artificial fly is used as bait and this is tied to a hook with the use of thread, feathers, fur, and other similar materials. The idea is to create an illusion that will match a natural vision of food to attract the fish. Used for fly fishing are fly rods and they are long in their design but are light in their weight. In order to provide the casting weight, the lines themselves are somewhat heavy. These lines are typically matched to the fly rod according to the weight and they may be made to either float or sink. Not only will the fly itself be very lightweight, but it will also be attached to the line.

Any ideas what the difference is between regular fishing and fly fishing? It is more than just the bait, isn't it? Sure. Casting is the main difference between fly fishing and regular fishing in which you use the weight of the bait in order to throw out the line but in fly fishing, a weightless bait is used and weighted line will direct the actual placement.

Commonly done in two different forms is fly fishing and this consists of either dry or wet. Dry flies are coated to sit atop the water's surface, while wet flies are placed beneath the water's surface in an attempt to lure fish.

At any bait shop, retail store's fishing department, or online specialty store, you can commonly find fly fishing rods and accessories. There are several online fly fishing experts who are more than happy to sell their recommended products. In fact, in order to feel their fly fishing appetite, the Internet may hold the greatest selection of fly fishing gear as customers are granted access to a world of business and a haven of products.

You can enjoy the art of fly fishing with the company of your friends. A quiet afternoon on the water, enjoying nature and competing for the greatest catch is all apart of the fun related to fly fishing. When it comes to fly fishing, there are a lot of areas that are accommodating and these would include the western United States and parts of Canada.
