It's unlikely you have heard of Ilha da Gigoia, much less been there. Definitely not a legendary location like Ipanema or Copacabana and it's not a very big island. A brief walk will cover the complete place and it should be taken into account that there are no streets or cars. Being such a hushed and relaxed environment makes for exceptional accommodations. If you're seeking a different vacation get away than staying at hotels, it may also delight you that Gigoia is in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, but yet still, most people have never heard of it, much less have they looked for apartments there.
Being among the most significant of islands in Lagoa da Tijuca, which lies at the northern end of Barra de Tijuca, near to Barra Point Shopping. Tucked away, this particular piece of real estate is a one of the hidden treasures of Rio de Janeiro, though still reasonably near to places like Copacabana and Ipanema. Cars are not a requirement here and there are boats that carry everyone to and from the island. The boats run 24 hours, 7 days a week. It won't take you long to get to know the ferryman and nearby residents of the island.
With somewhere in the community of 2000 folks living on the island, it clearly has a perception of community and without a doubt it will be an appealing place to travel to. In addition to flats and apartments, the island features local bars and dining establishments. Though you won't find any hotels and it's not an intense night life, it obviously has its charms and rentals are a real possibility. In addition to this you can also find numerous services including internet, laundry, a small drug store, as well as a local grocery store on the island, which can be suitable.
One of the tricks though is actually uncovering apartments, flats or any kind of rentals on Ilha da Gigoia. This is where it becomes required to know people. Being one of those "off the beaten path" kind of destinations, discovering accommodations on this quaint little island haven isn't as easy as surfing the internet or opening a newspaper. In this case, it really becomes critical to get out there and encounter people. If you're hunting for a place to live on the island, that little hole in the wall bar positioned near the "main street" has now become your portal to the neighborhood. Just ask around, at some point you interact with someone who knows someone who can point you in the right direction.
With some luck, you will soon find yourself in your new soothing island home. Away from the demanding city life, noises of traffic and standard nuisances. The perfect atmosphere for anyone who is looking for a little peace and quiet and a unique way of life. Not your standard holiday in hotels. So sit back, relax and enjoy the appeal that this little island life has to offer. Enjoy Rio de Janeiro in a unique light.
