Returnees from sabbatical or extended family matters due to illness or returning students may need cheap return flights. They are possible to find with some clues that many use whose business or personal preference involves airline travel. Having set departure and return dates can be the first step in getting a discount if there is certainty about when to return. If not there are a few options that can be considered.
Round trip tickets cost less than one way.
If the trip departure and return dates are known then round trip should be the first option to be considered. The rates fall even further if the excursion or advanced ticket options are used. Contingent on if there is a return date but should that date be uncertain there are other options.
They tell me standby is an option.
With time and patience a wait at the airport until there was an available seat could save as much as fifty percent on a flight. Recent regulations in regard to terror related incidents have tightened procedures. A ticket usually full fare will be required and stand by only guarantees that the more you paid for the ticket the better chance of finding an available seat on a departing flight. It is great for late or early departures. Airline employees, relatives and other relations benefit from standby.
Round trip tickets instead of one way for cheap return flights.
Because round trip is cheaper it is another way of discounting a one way ticket. Circumstances sometimes make it impossible for use of the return portion of the ticket. A notification to the airline to cancel the return ticket after arrival and less has been paid to reach the destination.
The airline will not refund the amount of the cancelled ticket and the cost of a one way has been substantially reduced. Airlines look upon the practice in a negative light but they cannot make you fly against your will.
Use a ticket consolidator.
These are not standby seats or booked charter flights but seats on the major commercial airlines. Consolidators have arrangements to assist in filling flights to capacity by selling tickets and passing on discounts to the traveler especially to international destinations. Through buying blocks of tickets they can offer discounts and provide for electronic confirmations with the airlines. Generally they cover the major cities and offer budget seating and cheap return flights.
